Therefore, one cannot simply join on their own; a Khenpo who acts as the ordainer is needed. The reason is that in the past, not long after the Fully Awakened Buddha, the beings to be tamed were naturally gentle, cautious, and rarely suffered from illnesses, so they did not need guidance or direction. Therefore, ordination was complete without a Khenpo or Acharya. Later beings are not like that, so in the current ritual, the main conducive condition for ordination is the Khenpo. The meaning of Khenpo is: Upa (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:upa, near), Dhara (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:dhara, holder), Sindha (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:sindha, joining), Vikarana (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:vikāraṇa,exposition), which means to protect with compassion from falling into samsara, bringing them closer; creating the cause for approaching the precious discipline; and expounding the precepts of entering and returning. That is, one needs to possess the qualities of a stable monk and the qualities of being learned and beneficial, that is, possessing the two qualities of stability and learning, which I am capable of achieving. Previously, you were the Acharya for laypeople, but now I would like to ask you to be the Khenpo for monks. Please repeat these words: Acharya, please listen. I, named so-and-so, request you, Acharya, to be my Khenpo. Please, Acharya, be my Khenpo. Please, Acharya Khenpo, ordain me. Repeat this three times, and on the third time, change "Khenpo Khenpo" to "Please." The method should be done well. Then, the Khenpo says to the attendant: This monk named so-and-so, please shave the hair and beard of this venerable one. After shaving, please shave the topknot. Thus he instructs. The attendant should also shave the hair and beard, except for the topknot. Then ask: Do you want to shave the topknot? If he says yes, shave it off and have him take a bath. Then prostrate at the feet of the Khenpo, sit squatting in front, the Khenpo hands him the upper robe, and the two hold it together, saying: This is the Dharma robe that is usually worn on the upper body, called the Kesa. It is a special mark that distinguishes it from householders and non-Buddhists. It helps to remember the practice. It is given as a garment that protects from the touch of heat and cold. Wear it as the Buddha, the Teacher, wore it, and make your mind peaceful and gentle. He hands him the lower skirt, saying: This is the lower part of the

The Dharma garment that I wear is called the lower garment. It covers the lower body and protects from the touch of heat and cold. It is distinct from the marks of householders and non-Buddhists. Since it is given as a garment for monks to remember, like the Buddha Shakyamuni, etc. Give the alms bowl, saying: "This is called an alms bowl, and it is distinct from the utensils of householders and non-Buddhists, etc. Just as it is filled with food, fill your own mind with qualities. Just as one enjoys food from within it, it symbolizes the enjoyment of Dharma. It is given for the purpose of receiving alms food, so please hold it." Give the sitting mat, saying: "This Dharma garment sitting mat, apart from the monastic grass mat, is for dwellings and the white clothes of householders, and when ordinary people use mostly undamaged variegated clothes, it protects and must be used without wasting. For that purpose, please hold it." Give the water strainer, saying: "This is called a water strainer. Those who have gone forth must turn away from harming sentient beings at the root. In general, one must avoid harming all sentient beings. In particular, when using water, with this place the creatures back in their place, and it is given for the purpose of enjoying clean water, so please hold it." Thus give. Here, the sutra root only mentions giving the saffron robes, but the Vinaya and the Karma Shatam say to give the alms bowl. Although there is no clear statement that the sitting mat and water strainer must be given, giving them is the custom. Having given the clothes in this way, the Khenpo (preceptor) himself puts them on, and incidentally checks for sexual characteristics. If entrusting to another, a certain monk says: "Please teach the wearing of this garment and also accomplish my work." Thus instruct. He also teaches the wearing and checks for sexual characteristics, and if there is no fault, then communicates that there are no obstacles. At the time of putting on the clothes, although not mentioned in the text, according to custom, everyone scatters flowers and prays: "May the victory banner of liberation stand firm! May pure conduct reach the end of life! May the aggregate of discipline be completely perfected! May one obtain ordination in all lifetimes!" Then give blessings. Then, have the person to be ordained prostrate three times each to the Teacher and the Khenpo.
