I prostrate to the Teacher, the All-Knowing One. With wisdom, he liberates from samsara; with compassion, he tames those to be tamed. He is the Lord of Sages, the god of gods, the All-Knowing, the master of beings. With hundreds of thousands of teachings on taming, with hundreds of lights, he dispels the darkness of ignorance in samsara. May Zhiwa Tsho (Śāntarakṣita), possessor of the light of qualities, with his profoundly clear intention, protect me. Having ascended the precious staircase of definite renunciation and flawless discipline, I will joyfully explain the ritual of leading to the delightful mansion of liberation. This has two parts: the first is the ritual for ordaining a śrāmaṇera (novice), and the second is the ritual for full ordination (bhikṣu). First, offerings are arranged before an image of the Teacher. Two sets of monastic robes, a begging bowl, a mat, a water strainer, and so forth are prepared. The candidate is seated comfortably in front. The monk acting as the preceptor asks about obstacles, facing the candidate: 'Due to your past merits and aspirations, it is extremely fortunate that you are ordaining into the Buddha's teachings in order to make meaningful the attainment of a fully endowed, noble human existence. However, the essence of the teachings, the training in discipline, must be given to someone who is free from obstacles and whose mind-stream is pure. Whether or not there are obstacles will be known from my questions, so please answer these questions truthfully: Are you not a non-Buddhist? Are you not under fifteen years old? Are you not fifteen years old but unable to scare away crows? Are you able to scare away crows but not under seven years old? Are you not a slave or the like? Are you in debt? 非未杀母者耶?", "english_translation": "not given permission?

Is it not? Is it not patricide? Is it not the killing of an Arhat? Is it not causing dissension in the Sangha? Is it not drawing blood from the Tathagata with malicious intent? Is it not that any of the four defeats have occurred? Is it not that one who does not accept the punishment of reversing the cause has been expelled from the monastery? Is it not someone with a severed hand, etc.? Is it not someone with yellow hair, etc.? Is it not someone who is a 'single nail,' etc.? Is it not someone who has been executed by the king, etc.? Is it not someone who is not permitted by the king? Is it not someone who is not permitted by the king and is not far from the country? Is it not someone who is known as a thief? Is it not someone who is ruined? Is it not a shoemaker? Is it not a Chandalas? Is it not a eunuch? Is it not a non-human being who pretends to be a human? Is it not someone with an unpleasant northern accent? Is it not someone whose name has been changed three times? Is it not a woman who looks like a man? Is it not someone with the characteristics of a criminal? Is it not someone who was born on another continent and has a different appearance? When asked these questions, if the answer is 'no,' then say, 'Then I will ordain you.' Thus, the occasion is distinguished. Then, have the person to be ordained prostrate three times to the teacher and to himself, have him sit squatting in front, and have him hold his palms together at his heart, saying, 'For you to be ordained, it is not enough to simply be free from obstacles and hindrances, but it is necessary to rely on the complete ritual of favorable conditions. Moreover, in order to gradually learn the teachings of the Buddha, it is first necessary to take the vows of a layperson, so think in this way.' This cycle of the three realms, no matter where one is born, high or low, cannot escape the nature of suffering, so abandon samsara and accomplish liberation and eternal bliss. For this purpose, take the Three Jewels as refuge, take the complete vows of a layperson, and vow to protect them for the rest of your life. Then repeat after me: Venerable ones, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time forward, until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the best of bipeds; take refuge in the Dharma, the best of those free from desire; take refuge in the Sangha, the best of assemblies. May the venerable ones accept me as a layperson for the rest of my life.
