The five of them are in complete accordance with fasting and so on, completely abandoning the ten non-virtues, and becoming a householder after being given. As it is said, the precepts of a householder, because they are the vows of abandoning the ten non-virtues, are the basis or root of all higher vows. Alcohol is the most serious of the transgressions that have been made because it leads to recklessness from drinking and leads to all other faults. Therefore, it is said that even a sick person who holds the vows should not drink even a drop of the tip of the root. Thus, by briefly explaining the precepts of a complete householder, you will also know the precepts of a householder who practices one part, one aspect, and mostly practices. The celibate householder who abandons non-celibacy instead of sexual misconduct from the five branches, and the Go Mi householder who keeps the eight-branch fast for as long as life lasts, etc., should be known elsewhere. The precepts of a refuge-taking householder are common to all. Thus, it is also said in the Vinaya: Householders, novices, and monks, etc., should not do the latter if they have not completely received the former. As it is said, it is the root of all the Buddha's teachings. Among them, the extensive explanation is that in the arrangement of the precepts, for those who diligently strive to accomplish them, the instructions are given until "one should have diligence," and after the complete explanation, one should dedicate the merit. The middle one is to briefly explain that one must abandon the four or five branches, including alcohol, and then make the dedication. It is the ritual of giving the vows of a complete householder. Svasti! I prostrate to the teacher of gods and humans, the son of Śuddhodana, the nature of great compassion. I will briefly explain the ritual of the eight-branch fast. Here, in order to accomplish the ritual of the eight-branch fast, there are three things: the ritual of receiving, the precepts after receiving, and the explanation of reasonableness. The first, the ritual of receiving the vows, is that in front of the objects of refuge and offerings that can be arranged, the teacher sits on a high seat, the student takes off his shoes, performs the five-branch bath, prostrates to the objects of refuge and the lama, and then squats or kneels. Sitting with palms together, the teacher clarifies the mind generation.

Then, having explained in detail or in brief the difficulties of obtaining leisure and endowment, the impermanence of death, and the faults of the cycle of karma and its results, thereby transforming the mind. It is good that you wish to take the vows of Uposatha. The reason it is good is that the noble Nagarjuna said: Like a yoke floating on the great ocean, and a turtle encountering it is even more rare, it is even more difficult to obtain a human body from the animal realm, therefore, O lord of humans, accomplish the fruit by practicing the sacred Dharma. And it is said: This life is full of harm, like a lamp blown by the wind, even more impermanent than a bubble in water, from inhaling and exhaling and falling asleep, to wake up with leisure, What is that is very amazing. As it is said, the precious human body of leisure and endowment is difficult to obtain, and even if obtained, it does not last long, but is of a nature to perish in an instant, and now, in this time when it remains for a short while, one must definitely take its essence. The way to obtain it also depends on accumulating merit and purifying obscurations. Among them, what is easy and of great benefit is to take and keep the vows of Uposatha. In the Sutra of Establishing Abiding it is said: One can count the number of water pots in the five great rivers such as the Ganges and the great ocean, but one cannot measure the benefits of Uposatha. With the merit of giving all possessions such as jewels to Arhats filling the entire Jambudvipa, it does not even equal one hundredth or one thousandth of the merit of Uposatha. In the Treatise on the Establishment of the World, Indra, the lord of the gods, also said: On the eighth day of the waxing moon and in the month of miracles, if one keeps the eight branches of Uposatha, that one will become like me. The Bhagavan declared: कौशिक (Tibetan: ཀོའུ་ཤི་ཀ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: कौशिक, Sanskrit Romanization: kauśika, Chinese literal meaning: 憍尸迦, name of Indra) do not say that. From the eighth day of the waxing moon, up to that one will become like me. Merely by Uposatha one will attain Buddhahood, so think in this way. Moreover, from this cycle of existence, all sentient beings, whatever they do in terms of dwelling, friends, and enjoyments, are merely enjoying the waves of suffering and the means of accomplishing suffering, which is truly pitiable. May they be placed on the ground of Buddhahood, for that purpose.
