Just as the earth returns. I, named so-and-so, from this time until the sun rises tomorrow, will not take what is not given, from "will not take what is not given" to "return." The eight branches With this, I recite once from the teachings of the noble Arhats to "follow," the method should be good. Second, guarding what has been obtained from being lost depends on understanding what should be learned. The precepts of refuge are explained as said elsewhere. The precepts of one's own fasting have eight branches, namely, not killing the life of a human or one who is born as a human, nor harming small lives. Not taking the property of others that is complete in value, not even taking small things that are not given. Not to mention not practicing non-celibacy, not even touching the body of others with desire. Not lying, not only not telling great lies, but not even lying for the sake of joking. Not drinking any wine that can intoxicate, not even a drop. Summarizing dancing, etc., garlands, etc., as one, not doing actions that make the mind frivolous and the body charming, thereby impairing dignity. Not sitting on high and large beds. It is necessary to guard against untimely food, that is, abandoning food after noon, these eight. Moreover, one should rely on the practice of Lord Atisha, relying on the three white foods, not touching even a trace of flesh and blood. For the sake of mindfulness, awareness, and caution, one should also perform urination, etc., as it is said. Thus, if one does not properly guard what should be abandoned, even if one has taken vows, no benefit will arise, showing the inconceivable faults of violating the rules. As it is said in the Vinaya-vibhaṅga: "Whoever regards the compassionate teachings of the teacher lightly and slightly transgresses, he thereby obtains suffering under the control of others, like cutting down a bamboo grove destroys a mango grove." And so on. Guarding properly has great benefits. As it is said in the Prātimokṣa Sūtra: "This is like the foundation of a staircase, entering the city of liberation." As said before, it will have inconceivable benefits. Moreover, since it has many necessities such as generating a sense of shame and embarrassment, it should first be received from the Acharya. The vows of fasting are limited in time, therefore, in order to abandon the vows when the dawn appears in the morning,

Again, during the time period that needs to be protected, receive it from the Lama. If the Lama is not present, then rely on the ritual of taking the Sojong vows yourself in front of the sacred object to receive it. On auspicious days, strive to learn as much as you can! After saying this, remember the kindness and prostrate. Third, explaining the rationality: In the Abhidharmakosha it says: "The complete limbs of the Upavasa, should first be received from another." Therefore, first, for a monastic or a householder abiding in Sojong, receive all the Upavasa vows of the eighth, fifteenth, and thirtieth days for as long as life lasts at once. Thereafter, if you cannot find a person from whom to receive the vows, then you should take them yourself in front of the sacred object. If you have never received them from a person before, even if you receive them in front of the sacred object, the vows will not arise. Those who have received them before should also receive them themselves in front of the sacred object on the date they need to be protected, and it is not permissible not to receive them. Furthermore, if you are seated higher than the person from whom you are receiving the vows, if you have not restrained your senses, if you are not respectful, if you repeat the words of others, if you are not fluent in speech, if the sun has risen, or if you are wearing new ornaments, these are all obstacles to the arising of the vows. If the sun does not rise tomorrow, if you die before that, if you develop wrong views, or if you renounce the vows, these are all causes for abandoning the vows. The cause of arising is the mind of renunciation. The method of abiding is to protect the objects of training well with mindfulness and awareness. Taking and protecting these vows for the rest of your life, like the great scholar Chandra Gomi, will turn you into a Gomi layperson. Thus, temporarily attaining the fruits of gods and humans, and ultimately attaining the fruit of perfect enlightenment. This is a concise, clear, easy-to-understand, and easy-to-practice ritual for accomplishing the eight-branched fast. This is called "The Ritual of Individual Liberation Vows for Guiding Householders - The Light of the Path to Liberation," which was written by the Shakya layperson Gyurme Dorje at the urging of the near-dweller Orgyen Namdrol at Orgyen Mindroling (monastery name).
