MLP0100006.Eleven Dharmas Indicating the Path Knowledge.g2.0f

English

The order is: First, the limb of the path wisdom and the path wisdom with limbs, two. First, there are three: definition, classification, and dispelling doubts. The first is encompassed by any of the five dharmas, such as the physical basis where path wisdom actually arises. The five characteristics of path wisdom are: the physical basis where it actually arises, the basis of thought, the awakening of causal factors, the nature of path wisdom, and its functions. Second, there are two: the limb that generates path wisdom that has not arisen, and the limb that benefits others after it has arisen. The definition of the first is: that which becomes the cause of striving to attain path wisdom that has not been attained. The classification is: physical basis, basis of thought, and the cause of proximate acquisition, three. The first is like a bodhisattva abiding in the last moment of the supreme dharma, free from manifest afflictions. The second is like the generation of mind in its continuum. The third is like the clear awareness of the mind consciousness that becomes the cause of path wisdom. The definition of the second is: that which becomes either the nature or the result of path wisdom. The classification is the nature of path wisdom and its function, two. The first is like the view and meditation of the Great Vehicle, which intentionally takes and does not abandon the habitual tendencies of afflictions, the cause of taking birth in samsara for the sake of others. The second is like the activities and deeds that arise from relying on the contributing condition of path wisdom. The third is: In general, it is said that all ordinary beings have innate ego-clinging in their continuum, but this is only a rough statement. Furthermore, although a bodhisattva abiding in the last moment of the supreme dharma is an ordinary being, he does not have innate ego-clinging, because he is free from pride. Because realization arises only in the continuum that has subdued pride. Thus it is said. The classification of vehicles is: how the ultimate is established as one vehicle, how all sentient beings become Buddhas, and how samsara has no end, three. The first is: Although three vehicles are established considering the three types of beings in the temporary state, in terms of the ultimate, it is established as one vehicle. As the "Lotus Sutra" says: "There is only one vehicle, there is no second, nor is there ever a third in the world, except that the supreme beings use various skillful means to teach." And as the "Lankavatara Sutra" says: "To lead all sentient beings, I have taught different vehicles.

It is said, "I have taught the One Vehicle." Secondly, if it is a sentient being, then it is certain to become a Buddha, because its continuum is pervaded by the lineage that is the main cause. Because the accidental stains of adverse conditions can be removed, and the activities of the Buddha of favorable conditions can enter into it. The first point is established, because it is said, "The perfect Buddha body is the reason for emitting light," and so on. The second point is established, because it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "The nature of the mind is clear light, and the stains are accidental." The third point is established, because it is said in the Uttaratantra, "Because of the definite arising from the power of others, and seeing oneself and sentient beings as equal, and because the activities are not completely fulfilled, samsara will not end in existence." And also in the Sutra Requested by Moon Lamp, "All these beings will become Buddhas, because there are no non-receptacles of sentient beings here." Thirdly, in general, samsara has no end, because it is said in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, "Without beginning, first, last, end, therefore samsara is said to be without beginning or end." If someone asks, then the Four Hundred Verses say, "Having seen the selflessness of objects, the seed of existence will cease," and so on, does this contradict it? There is no fault, because it refers to the end of the samsara of individual beings. Incidentally, for the sake of others, taking birth in samsara, examining what the name is for the afflictions that are deliberately sought and not abandoned. In general, first, the usage of the word affliction should be explained, the affliction mentioned here should be identified, and the classification of taking birth should be explained incidentally, there are three types. First, manifestation, seed, and habit. The definition of the first type: it is the consciousness that grasps the appearance of its own object, which makes the mind stream unable to be completely pacified. Example: root afflictions, near afflictions, and all minds and mental factors that correspond to them. The definition of the second type: it is the potential that is left in the mind stream by previous afflictions, which is the potential state that can generate subsequent afflictions when it encounters conditions. Classification: seeds that arise simultaneously with afflictions, and seeds whose afflictions have ceased at their own time. The first type is: the ability of ignorance to continuously generate the latter with the same lineage as the former.

For example. The second is like the seeds of affliction in the continuum of a Hearer Arhat who abides in meditative equipoise. The definition of the third: Any subtle and subtle stains of habitual tendencies left in the mind-stream by previous similar afflictions, which, when encountering conditions, have absolutely no ability to produce subsequent similar afflictions. The habitual tendencies of afflictions, its habitual tendencies, the ground of ignorance habitual tendencies, etc., are all different names. Among them, the first two are the nature of afflictive obscurations, and the latter is imputed. The second point is that the first two afflictions mentioned earlier are not the afflictions referred to here, because the afflictions referred to here are the cause for Bodhisattva Aryas to take rebirth in samsara for the benefit of others, because they have abandoned the birth and death in samsara caused by the power of karma and afflictions. As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Aryas have completely abandoned the suffering of death, disease, and old age, having uprooted them." Therefore, it is established from the perspective of the third. And this third is further divided into two types: the habitual tendencies of afflictions that hinder enlightenment, and the habitual tendencies of afflictions that become their companions. Among them, it is not the first, because (it is said in the sutra) "Simultaneously abandoning afflictions and cognitive obscurations." Therefore, it is the second, because Bodhisattva Aryas, for the benefit of others, will specially strive to hold it as a limb for accumulating merit. As stated in the Kashyapaparivarta Sutra: "Just as the impure excrement of people in a city is beneficial to sugarcane fields. Similarly, the excrement of afflictions of Bodhisattvas is beneficial for generating the Dharmas of the Buddhas." Asanga also said: "Afflictions transform into limbs of enlightenment, such sons of the Buddhas are inconceivable." Third, what is the cause of taking rebirth, and how to take rebirth are two aspects. First, Lesser Vehicle trainees and ordinary beings take rebirth under the control of karma and afflictions, because they have not abandoned them, so they involuntarily experience birth and death. Lesser Vehicle Arhats and Bodhisattva Aryas take rebirth in samsara based on the ground of ignorance habitual tendencies and the cause of uncontaminated karma, the former in order to attain nirvana without remainder, and the latter in order to accumulate merit for the benefit of others, and must take a mind-made body. The reason lies in karma and afflictions.
