There are eight absorptions: the four formless absorptions. The first seven each have three aspects: with savor, defiled, pure, and without outflows. The eighth has two aspects: pure and defiled. Among these, 'with savor' means connected with existence. 'Pure' refers to the absorption that has become the nature of worldly virtue. 'Without outflows' refers to the absorption that has become the nature of the path beyond the world. Defiled absorptions do not fully possess the limbs of meditation. The defiled meditations of the four dhyanas do not possess the joy and happiness of the first dhyana, the inner clarity of the second, the mindfulness and awareness of the third, and the complete purity of equanimity and the complete purity of mindfulness of the fourth. Some, such as Kashmira's Bhadanta, say that they also do not possess pliancy and equanimity, because they are said to be of the nature of virtue. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'Thus, the essence of the absorptions themselves, eight kinds, the first seven have three kinds: with savor, and pure, and without outflows, the eighth has two kinds. With savor is equally connected with existence. The virtue of worldly beings is purity; it is savored by that. Without outflows is beyond the world.' The first has five: investigation, analysis, joy, happiness, and concentration. The second has four limbs: inner clarity and joy, etc. The third has five: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, happiness, and abiding. The last has four: mindfulness, equanimity, neither happiness nor suffering, and concentration. There are eleven entities in the first: pliancy is happiness, inner clarity is joy. The Sutra Pitaka has two kinds: joy and mental happiness. Defiled meditations do not have joy and happiness, inner clarity and awareness, mindfulness and equanimity, purity of mindfulness. Some say there is no pliancy and equanimity, because they are liberated from the eight faults. The fourth is unmoving. So it is said. Some say that it is impossible for the body of a person in the second dhyana or higher to touch what is tangible, for the eye to see forms, or for the ear to hear sounds, because those in the second dhyana or higher do not have sense consciousnesses included by the aggregates. It is impossible for a person in the second dhyana or higher to speak, because they do not have the motivation for speech, which is investigation and analysis, because those in the second dhyana or higher do not have what is included by the aggregates.
