Because of being one-pointed (with equanimity) and possessing four limbs, in the third dhyana, the limbs of antidote are mindfulness and clear knowing, and three kinds of equanimity, the limb of benefit is mental happiness, and the limb of basis is samadhi, thus possessing five limbs. In the fourth dhyana, the limbs of antidote are pure mindfulness and pure equanimity, the benefit of feeling that is neither pleasure nor pain is equanimity, and the limb of basis is samadhi, thus possessing four limbs. The formless (absorptions) are not transcendence because the limbs are similar, because the limbs of all (absorptions) are the same in equanimity and one-pointedness. Moreover, from the object of focus, it is not truly transcendence, there is a difference of peace and coarseness, just as the width of a cloth is the same, but there is a difference of fineness and thickness. The third (part) is, entering the first dhyana with seven kinds of attention, namely, the characteristic of complete understanding arising from aspiration, and complete solitude, and gathering joy, and the edge of investigation and combination, and the attention to the result of the edge of combination. The first is, the attention to the earth of abiding, because the faults of afflictions and suffering are desired to be greater and coarser, and those are smaller and more peaceful, it is the characteristic of the first dhyana, it is the order of hearing and thinking. The second is, then, in the manner of single-pointed meditation, focusing on the characteristics of peace and coarseness, meditating on shamatha and vipassana, and aspiring to peace and coarseness with investigation and analysis. The third is, because of familiarizing with those, it is the path of abandoning the three great afflictions. The fourth is, because of rejoicing in abandoning, abandoning the medium afflictions, touching with the small joy and happiness of solitude, constantly with faith making oneself free from dullness and sleep and regret and excitement and distraction, therefore completely rejoicing. The fifth is, in order to know whether the afflictions of desire have been abandoned or not, attending to the sign of repulsiveness, etc., contemplating whether they arise or not. The sixth is, then, In order to abandon the three small afflictions, practicing the antidote until reaching the actual basis of the first (dhyana), these six are the preparations, and relying on them, there is nothing that cannot abandon afflictions, therefore it is invincible. The seventh is, the actual basis of the first (dhyana). Similarly, in the lower ones, suffering is great and life is short, the higher ones are the opposite of those, they are coarse.

First, through tranquility, recognizing what should be abandoned and what should be accepted, thereby settling the mind, this is the first. After that, initiating the correct practice, this is the second. Abandoning the gross afflictions of the lower realms, this is the third. Abandoning the intermediate afflictions, this is the fourth. Abandoning the pride of manifest attainment, this is the fifth. Abandoning the subtle afflictions, this is the sixth. In this way, through the fruit of meditation, experiencing the fundamental state, this is the seventh, which is entering into samadhi up to the peak of existence. Fourth, craving, views, pride, and ignorance, having become afflictions, are obscured and become unpredicated. Fifth, the samadhi of the pure realms, the formless realms, for the sake of virtue, are free from the defilements that bind from all sides, therefore it is called "completely pure." The formless samadhi arising from the highest limit part, in order to manifestly accomplish special qualities, is workable as desired, therefore it can reach the supreme, and is called "pure." Sixth, by meditating on these mental activities as small, medium, and large, the three births of the four dhyanas are accomplished. The formless (realm) does not have other places like the immeasurable palace, so there is no difference in birth, but by meditating on smallness and so on, the length of life has differences of high and low, and the amount of afflictions has differences of good and bad. Moreover, the sutra says: the samadhi with both investigation and analysis, the samadhi without investigation but with analysis, and the samadhi without both investigation and analysis, these three, what are they referring to? The first is the mere fundamental state of the first dhyana, the second is the special fundamental state of that, and the third is explained as the fundamental state of the second dhyana and above. Thus. The fundamental state of the first dhyana has two aspects, coarse and fine, the first is that which possesses all faults such as investigation and analysis, and the special aspect is from the aspect of abandoning investigation. The pure aspect has two types: the samadhi that has become the nature of worldly virtue, and the samadhi that has become the nature of transcendental virtue. The fourth dhyana is called immovable, because it is liberated from the eight faults of dhyana. The eight faults are: investigation, analysis, exhalation, inhalation, pleasure, pain, joy, and sorrow. The eight natures of the fundamental samadhi are: the four dhyanas and form
