If one does not gradually familiarize oneself with the stages, then it is impossible to directly see reality on the path of seeing. How is that? With the samadhi of warmth, one familiarizes oneself with the meaning of the absence of inherent existence of the apprehended object of all afflictions; with the samadhi of the peak, one familiarizes oneself with the absence of inherent existence of the purified apprehended object; with the samadhi of forbearance, one familiarizes oneself with the meaning of the absence of inherent existence of all the apprehended phenomena represented by the person, in the manner of increasing clarity. Having thus familiarized oneself with the absence of inherent existence of both the apprehended and the apprehender, even though clarity increases in its meaning, in order to abandon that which is associated with the conceptual thought that clings to non-existence, in the samadhi of supreme dharma, by the sign that the object to be negated, true establishment, does not exist, one familiarizes oneself in the manner of increasing clarity with the meaning that even the non-existence of that which is negated does not exist. Thus, the first three samadhis of the four parts of ascertainment of the Great Vehicle are related to the four conceptual thoughts that have the aspect of establishment as objects to be abandoned, and are associated with the three conceptual thoughts that have the aspect of negation. In the supreme dharma, the conceptual thought that has the aspect of negation, which is the same as the previous three, is related to the object to be abandoned, and it is also associated with the conceptual thought that has the aspect of the negation of freedom from elaboration. Although those samadhis are associated with those conceptual thoughts, if one were to accept the nature of those conceptual thoughts, it would follow that it is the obscuration of knowledge, therefore, although one accepts that the conceptual thought that has the ability to establish is an object to be abandoned, it is not reasonable to say that it has the nature of a conceptual thought that has the aspect of negation. Third, in the stage of aspiration and conduct, although one gradually familiarizes oneself with reality as the object, with the distinction of the apprehended and the apprehender, in the path of seeing, it is not necessary to see gradually in accordance with the order of how one has familiarized oneself, because from the point of view of seeing reality directly as the object, there is no difference that is not the same. As it is said in the Two Truths: "Therefore, by seeing things, one sees all qualities." Fourth, in explaining how to accomplish the meaning of the instruction, there are four: the basis of accomplishment, the lineage; its object; its purpose; and the nature of the accomplishment itself. First, in the section of "The six dharmas of realization," etc.

Regarding the meaning, definition, classification, and ultimate analysis of lineage, there are four points. The first is: Generally, the meaning of "lineage" (Tibetan: རིགས་, rigs) is "cause." As stated in the sutra: "The beginningless realm of time is the place of all dharmas. Because of this, all beings and nirvana are attained." Differentiating this essence from the perspective of reliance and being relied upon, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Nature and growth, that is reliance and being relied upon, existence and non-existence of self and qualities, are called lineage for the sake of liberation." Therefore, the aspect of emptiness of the realm is the cause of the emptiness of the nature of the Dharmakaya, just as a treasure of wish-fulfilling jewels becomes the source of what is desired and needed, opening the path for the manifestation of Rupakaya and wisdom. Therefore, it is the naturally abiding lineage. The aspect of the manifestation of wisdom arising from that is the cause of the emptiness of the two Rupakayas, just as a fruit-bearing tree grows, and by the power of being free from obstacles, the qualities inherent in oneself will surely manifest. Therefore, it is the lineage of growth and transformation. In the Uttaratantra Shastra, it says: "Like a treasure and a fruit-bearing tree, lineage should be known as two types: beginningless, naturally abiding, and perfectly attained, the most supreme. From this very lineage, one wishes to attain the three bodies of the Buddha. The first is the first body, and the second is the latter two bodies." The second point is: What is the lineage of the Buddha? It is the place of lineage that is free from impurities and ultimately appears as the Buddha. The third point is divided into three: classifying from the perspective of definition, explaining the characteristics of lineage, and specifically explaining the classification of the Tathagatagarbha. The first is divided into two: the naturally abiding lineage and the lineage of growth and transformation. The definition of the first: What is the lineage of the Buddha? It is the place of lineage that is free from impurities and ultimately appears as the nature of the Dharmakaya. It is classified into two: the naturally abiding lineage that serves as the basis for practice and the one that does not serve as the basis for practice. The definition of the first: It serves as the basis for practicing one's own object of reliance. It is classified into two: the naturally abiding lineage that serves as the basis for the practice of the Hinayana and the Mahayana. The definition is like the Dharma nature of the mind in the continuum of those respective teachings. The number of the thirteen naturally abiding lineages that serve as the basis for the thirteen practices mentioned here is: the four stages of joining and the path of seeing and the path of meditation.
