I, the dull one, and those with great afflictions, pass through successive births upwards. Among these, those who mostly practice insight meditation go up to Akanistha, while those who mostly practice calm abiding go to the ultimate limit of the peak of existence. These are the two types. The first is that, having obtained the non-returner's state in the desire realm, one abides relying on the mind of the fourth dhyana. A single continuation with the aspect of truth arises, which is small. Three continuations arise, then four. Two continuations arise, which is medium, then six. The sixth continuation arises, which is large, then nine. The eighth continuation arises, which is very large, then twelve. The tenth continuation arises, which is extremely large. If fifteen continuations arise and one falls from that, one is born in the five pure abodes in sequence. If one falls to the level of the first dhyana, dies, and is born in the first dhyana, and then gradually passes to Akanistha, the dull one leaps with the three qualities of sharpness, medium, and dullness, or leaps halfway, dying and transmigrating in all places. The first is that, from the desire realm, one is born in the Brahma host realm, cultivates fifteen continuations there, and is born in Akanistha, obtaining the Arhat state. The second is that, from the desire realm, one is born in the Brahma host realm, and then in one or two of the pure abodes, and then obtains the Arhat state in Akanistha. The second is that, from the desire realm, one is born in the Brahma host realm, the Brahma attendant realm, and the Great Brahma realm. Among these three, the Great Brahma is the place of viewing, and because the chief has become one, the noble ones are not born there. The three of the second dhyana: Lesser Light, Immeasurable Light, and Radiant Light. The three of the third dhyana: Lesser Virtue, Immeasurable Virtue, and Virtue Increase. The three branches of the fourth dhyana, the places of individual beings: Cloudless, Merit-Born, and Great Fruit. The branches of the noble ones' places: Non-Great, Non-Afflicted, Bountiful Appearance, Extremely Visible, and Akanistha, which are the five gods of the pure abodes. One is born in that: obtained (pure), and obtains the Arhat state in Akanistha. The second is that, ascending upwards, without cultivating dhyana, one mostly cultivates calm abiding and tastes the flavor of absorption. From the Brahma host realm to the Great Fruit realm, one abandons the pure abodes and gradually goes to the four formless realms, ultimately obtaining the Arhat state at the peak of existence. Those ascending upwards can also pass into nirvana in the intermediate state. Thus, it is also said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Those nine are exhausted as non-returners, those are born in the intermediate state with effort, without effort, complete nirvana, upwards."

Those transferences are like this: Having cultivated meditation, one goes to Akanistha. There, some increase by half, some increase completely. Other death transferences go to the peak of existence. This is how it is said. The second is: The basis for obtaining the non-returner, although having abandoned desire for the form realm, has not abandoned desire for the formless realm, therefore, having been born in the formless realm, one obtains the Arhat fruit, there are born and passing away, with effort passing away, without effort passing away, and upward transference, these four. There is no passing away in the intermediate state, because there is no intermediate state of the formless realm. As the Treasury says: Others, the formless realm beings, have four. These are the distinctions of obtaining the non-returner by the very basis of obtaining the path of seeing. The third is: On the basis of the path of seeing, having obtained the non-returner, and the antidote to all the afflictions of the higher realms is also completed in that life, thereby obtaining the Nirvana with remainder and the Nirvana without remainder. As the Treasury says: Others, here, enter into sorrow. The fourth is: Having obtained the non-returner on the basis of the human realm, having perfected from the first dhyana to the peak of existence, and then having obtained the cessation attainment and entered into passing away, if the noble one wants to pass away in this life, then they pass away in this very life, not going to the higher realms, and also not being born in the desire realm. If one does not want to pass away in this life, and their faculties are dull, then there is a possibility of decline, therefore, in the next life, they are born in the form realm, and having entered into cessation, they manifest with a Dharma body similar to Nirvana. Why manifest with the body? Because at that time there is no mind, therefore, relying on the body, they are born. Having arisen from that, one will think that the cessation attainment is as peaceful as Nirvana, having a pure body, afflictions pacified, thereby obtaining what was not previously obtained. Just as the Treasury says: The non-returner who has obtained cessation, wants to manifest with the body. This is how it is said. In the fourth, there are two, entering and abiding, the first is the non-returner who has abandoned one affliction of the first dhyana, until the afflictions of the peak of existence are abandoned. Moreover, abiding in the Vajra-like Samadhi of the uninterrupted path that abandons the ninth, is also entering into the fruit of Arhat, as the Treasury says: The eight obstacles of the peak of existence are exhausted, that is entering into Arhatship. The ninth…
