In the supreme joyful instruction, it says, "Now, the day when the winter shadow changes, the sun's interval roughly corresponds to the lunar mansion day." Here, Phukpa Sonam Tsering says, "The eighth lunar mansion day is that lunar mansion month, so the initial shadow does not change. From the ninth lunar mansion day, the shadow becomes longer and shorter." This is consistent with the previous view and is good. However, he says that it is in accordance with the root and commentary of the Treasury (Abhidharmakosha), such as 'From the final ninth day, the night becomes long,' which is very unreasonable. Because the system of the Treasury is more westward than the sutra system's solstice point, which will be explained below. If one does not want the solstices to be different in different places of Jambudvipa, then one should abandon the node of the eighth lunar mansion day, etc., and in Tibet, one should only do what is said in the sutra commentary. If that is the case, in one's own writing, writing 'The winter solstice is at twenty-five degrees, returning at the junction of Sagittarius and Capricorn,' etc., this creates a difference of about twenty-two lunar mansion days, and it should be understood that this cannot avoid the incorrect aspects such as the fault of action mentioned in the Great Commentary. We, relying on the kindness of the venerable Avalokiteshvara, have truly obtained pure certainty, which is in accordance with the view of the root sutra." Etc., he praised loudly, saying so much, one should distinguish it oneself. These words are said incidentally. So, which of these two methods of determining the red calendar should be adopted here? The sutra says: 'To know the deficiency and excess here, one should fully observe the shadow of the gnomon for ten days in the first month of the northward movement. From which day the shadow of the gnomon returns from the north, that day is the day of the solar transition with that week, that date, that combination, and that action. On that day, the sun's enjoyment is twenty degrees in the position of the constellation and fifteen degrees in the position of the hour, which is the fundamental certainty.' Abhaya says: 'The day when the shadow disappears is the day of the solar transition to the north.' According to the meaning of these teachings, it seems appropriate to consider the day when the shadow changes as the day of return itself.

Moreover, the great scholar Dromtönpa also practiced in this way, so it is recorded in this text as well. Third, the guidance to the explanation of the practice ritual, that is, after determining these meanings, guidance is given in the twenty-second chapter. Now, since this part has not been explained, it will be explained now. That is, when Panchen (Master) studied the place where the twenty-fifth degree appears, just as the twelve segments of land, each at its center or diameter, are said to be the reversal points of the sun in summer and winter, and the ending points of the zodiacal months. The reversal of the sun in a day should also be done with one reversal point each day, as the ending point of each zodiacal day. As it is said, therefore, it is also said in this text: The time when the enjoyment of the zodiacal day ends, is the point where the summer sun reverses. Some great scholars say, such as Taktsangpa and others, that the time when the sun reverses must be the time when the horn of Mount Meru and Mars touch and burn. If that were the case, any continent could only touch half of the sun, because it is impossible to touch the other half. Moreover, the end of the zodiacal day may also end at night, so it is not necessarily at noon. If it ends at night, it must be assumed that the sun of this continent has reversed to another continent, so it is unreasonable. Although it is true that such doubts generally arise, however, you, the refuter, should be asked in return, when the sun reaches Cancer, it begins to move north, so do you admit that when the thirty zodiacal days of Sagittarius end, the winter solstice in the scriptures, and when the sun reaches Cancer, it begins to move south, so do you admit that when the thirty zodiacal days of Pisces end, the summer solstice? If you do not admit it, then how should you explain the saying in the scriptures: "Due to the movement, Cancer and others become wealth, and Cancer and others become debt"? If you admit it, is the end of that thirty zodiacal day fixed at noon or not? If it is fixed, then if I say that the end of all zodiacal days is at noon, what is the difference? If it is not fixed, then it contradicts the statement that the time of the sun's reversal must be at noon. If you say that even if Pisces and Sagittarius have ended, the thirty zodiacal days of those two have not ended, then, does a month not have thirty zodiacal days?
