As it is said, "From earth, from water bubbles one knows water, wise Bodhisattvas know lineage from valid cognition." Like this, there is the cause of the effect, and in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Slightly possessing the characteristic of arising, whatever that is, all are of the nature of cessation." Like this is the cause of nature, and "Valid cognitions are not permissible, without which it is not permissible to have an effect, depending on a specific cause, some are the effect of omniscience." Like this are the causes of non-observation. The cause of what is to be measured, which is extremely obscure, is that both direct perception and the cause of the power of things cannot be established, so it must be realized by relying on the three examinations of pure scripture. There are three points about the history of how valid cognition logic arose. The first point is the Buddha's statement: "Monks, knowing blue with the consciousness of the eye, it is not thinking it is blue." The part before "knowing blue" shows the non-erroneous awareness. "It is not thinking it is blue" shows that it is free from conceptualization, thus clearly explaining the characteristics of direct perception. Again, "Monks, there are two ways of knowing form, namely relying on the eye and the mind." Where "eye" shows the sense direct perception, "relying on the mind" shows the mental direct perception. "There is no mind on the mind, the nature of the mind is luminosity." Shows the self-awareness direct perception. "On all dharmas, the eye of dharma is without dust and free from defilement, completely pure." Shows the yoga direct perception. Thus, the four direct perceptions and all three modes of reasoning of inference are all explained in the sutras as previously stated. The second point is the explanation by the wise: From the teacher's lineage, Arhat Dharmapala, Panchen Mei Wangga De taught the wise great master Dignāga, who also wrote the treatise on valid cognition called the debate argument in his youth. Dignāga had four disciples who were proficient in their own knowledge, among whom the one who was more proficient in valid cognition than Dignāga himself was Dignāga, who was born in a Brahmin family in the southern city of Singapakhtra, near the country of Kanchi, and was very proficient in all the tenets of the heretics.

Having mastered the three pitakas of hearing, he once went to Nalanda and relied on the wise Vasubandhu, mastering the three vehicles. In particular, he became proficient in the Vijnanavada school and epistemology, and it is said that he composed more than a hundred treatises on them. Later, he went to the country of Bisha in Uddiyana and devoted himself to meditation. Because of the power of his unique wisdom, the previously composed treatises became like scattered fragments, and he thought that they should be unified. Having become a valid means of cognition, wishing to benefit beings, I prostrate to the Teacher, the Sugata, the Protector. In order to establish validity, from all my own treatises, I gather and unify here the various scattered fragments. He wrote this with lime. The earth shook, light pervaded all directions, and a great sound arose. At that time, a Brahmin named Black Brahmin knew that this was an ominous sign, so he came to the place where the teacher was begging for alms and erased it. He erased it twice like that. The third time, he wrote: If you erase it for the sake of joking and jesting, then there is no need to erase it, because it is meaningful. If you want to argue because you do not understand the meaning, then reveal yourself. After writing this, he came to the place where he was begging for alms and sat down as before. When the teacher came, he debated with the Dharma as his witness, and defeated the heretics many times, but the heretic scattered ashes of mantras on the teacher, and all the teacher's belongings were burned. The teacher himself was almost burned, and the heretic left. At that time, he thought, If I cannot do even this one person's thing, how can I do other people's things? So he threw the lime into the sky and vowed that if it fell to the ground, he would give up the mind of enlightenment. At that time, the noble Manjushri himself appeared and said: Do not generate the mind of the Hinayana. Until perfect enlightenment, I will take care of you. Write that treatise well, the heretics cannot cause harm, and in the future it will become one eye of all treatises. The prophesied treatise Compendium on Epistemology, etc., has immeasurable wonderful biographies. He explained it to Ishvarasena. He explained it to Dharmakirti, the crown jewel of all logicians, who was the fifth Lion King, and the king...
