As it is said, teaching in order to clarify the doctrine, composing in order to make the doctrine last long, debating in order to cut off wrong views about the doctrine. These are the three doors through which the wise enter. Here, from the sutra on repaying kindness: If a bodhisattva does not study the five sciences, he will never be able to attain the omniscient wisdom in unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Therefore, in order to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, one must study the five sciences. A bodhisattva is one who knows and repays kindness, and should explain and show the objects that are taught to sentient beings. How should it be explained? In order to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, one should explain the five sciences. And, in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra of the noble Asaṅga: What are the five sciences? They are: inner science, medical science, logic, grammar, and the science of crafts. Therefore, in order to pursue the state of omniscience,

The subjects to be studied by all disciples are the five sciences. In general, there are many classifications mentioned in the sutras, such as the eighteen sciences, but it is said that they are all included within the five sciences. As it says in "Entering the Gate of the Wise": "That is grammar, logic, medicine, and the knowledge of inner and outer livelihoods." That is what is being referred to. The necessity of studying these well is as follows: GyaltsapMipham Gonpo said, "Without being skilled in the five sciences, even the supreme ones cannot become omniscient. Therefore, one should strive for it in order to subdue others, to take others under one's wing, and to know everything oneself." Therefore, the science of grammar primarily eliminates errors in terms of words, and the science of logic primarily eliminates errors in terms of meaning. These two are the sciences used to refute those who have wrong ideas about words and meanings. Furthermore, the craft of engineering generally accomplishes what is needed, and the science of healing specifically seeks to be free from illness. These two are used to take others under one's wing, so they are called the sciences of taking others under one's wing. The inner science enables oneself to know all the essential points (both concise and extensive). The Craft of Engineering. Among these, the craft of engineering includes the other three sciences. How does it include them? Based on whether body and speech are primarily involved or not, there are three types of crafts: body, speech, and mind. As it is said, "The crafts of body, speech, and mind are divided into three." That is to say, the movements of the body and the expressions of speech that are related to the mind are considered body craft and speech craft. What is determined solely by the thought of the mind, without being related to either of the two, is called mind craft. Therefore, the sixty-four arts mentioned in the Extensive Play Sutra and the commentary on the Vinaya Minor Matters, the thirty skills of letters and arithmetic, etc., that appear in the Distinguishing Treatise, the eighteen categories of music such as dance and song, the seven determinations of melodies such as intermediate and upright, the nine aspects of dance such as gracefulness, the eighteen smelting processes such as groups mentioned in the sutras, the eight types of examination such as precious stone examination, and all methods of accomplishing what is needed are included in the craft of engineering.
