Although the scope is extremely broad, it is now referred to by a specific category of common names, known as painting and sculpture. Regarding how the tradition of painting arose in the world, it is said that in the past, a human king named 'Jigthul' (Conqueror of Fear) ruled the kingdom according to Dharma, and as a result, people's lifespans increased to one hundred thousand years. At that time, a Brahmin's son died prematurely. The king took the Brahmin to the presence of Yama, the King of Death, and requested that his son be returned. Yama said that because his karma was exhausted, he could not return him. In the end, they waged war against each other, and the whole world was terrified. Brahma intervened and drew the Brahmin's son as a picture, resurrecting him as if he were alive, and gave him to the Brahmin, pacifying the war. Later, the king went to Brahma's abode and inquired about the method of painting. Brahma praised, 'The best of mountains is Mount Sumeru, the chief of those born from eggs is the Garuda, the chief of humans is the king, and likewise, painting is the chief of arts.' He prophesied the chief of the gods, Vishvakarman. It is said that he possessed special craftsmanship skills. Generally, during the time when the teacher Shakyamuni was alive, the tradition of painting and the concrete image of the teacher, the heart (Tibetan: སྙིང་, Sanskrit Devanagari: हृदय, Sanskrit Romanization: hṛdaya, Chinese literal meaning: heart), were sent as gifts to King Utrayana. As a return gift from the daughter Mutig Tree, the tradition of painting, in which the rays of light emanating from the teacher's body were drawn on cloth as much as possible, and the light was suppressed by the painting, flourished in Kashmir and the central regions. Maitreya acted as the patron, and the divine craftsman built the statue of Jowo Rinpoche. When he was born in Lumbini Garden, King Suddhodana built stupas, and so on, and the Eight Stupas of the Sugatas appeared. For about a hundred years after the teacher Shakyamuni passed away, human craftsmen possessed the magical power of karma and were able to create wonderful crafts such as statues that could actually create illusions. After these gradually disappeared, many divine craftsmen transformed into humans, and the eight wonderful relics of Magadha, such as Bodh Gaya, appeared. Later, during the time of King Sangye Phyo, King Bimbisara's sculptures and paintings were similar to those of the divine craftsmen, and this technique was known as the Central Style.

During the time of King Ngangtsul, there was a craftsman named Khrikdhari whose sculptural style resembled that built by Yakshas, and this artistic tradition was known as the ancient Western style. During the time of King Paldan Chokyong, there was a man named Dhiman and his son Birpalo, whose styles resembled that of the Naga craftsmen, and the style inherited by the son was called the Eastern deity. In terms of painting, the style inherited by the father was called Eastern painting, and the style inherited by the son was considered Central painting. In the region of Kashmir, later a man named Nyasuraja initiated both painting and sculpture styles, which are now called Kashmiri style. In the land of Tibet, both painting and sculpture were initially heavily influenced by Indian and Nepalese styles. Later, it is said that sculpture became closer to the Nepalese deity style, while painting became closer to the Chinese painting style, and it seems to resemble these styles. In general, due to the different skills of each craftsman, different traditions emerge. In addition, the smelting methods of statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, musical instruments, porcelain silk, armor weapons, horses, and other objects created by Chinese and Indian craftsmen, as well as the scriptures explaining these, such as the Sutra of Shariputra and the Kalachakra Tantra, and the treatise on mensuration written by the son of the sage Yeza, and ancient texts such as treatises on alchemy, as well as the writings and introductions to objects written by Drungton Lhapa Chen and Ja Tashi Dargye, etc. These have been passed down, and there are many different styles, but it is impossible to record them all.
