One should accomplish benefit and happiness. To the explanation of the science of life, one should be extremely respectful. As stated in the Explanatory Tantra: In the human body, which is the chief of the six realms of beings, for the sake of people's well-being, healing the sick, and achieving longevity, Dharma, wealth, and happiness, if one were to briefly summarize the meanings of the science of healing, it would be the object to be healed, the agent of healing, how to heal, and the healing and the healer, four aspects. Therefore, the object to be healed is disease and the patient; the agent of healing is conduct, diet, and medical treatments; how to heal is to live long without disease and to heal altered diseases; the healers are medicines and attendants, etc. In short, in the eight branches, all the subjects of healing are included in the four: medicine, patient, attendant, and doctor. And each of these must have four qualities. As it is said: What is taught as healing is the four branches: doctor, medicine, attendant, and patient. Each of these also has four aspects. The doctor must be skilled, intelligent, know the meaning of the scriptures, see all actions, and be clean. The medicine must have many rituals, possess many qualities, be complete, and suitable. The attendant must be loving, clean, careful, and intelligent. The patient must be wealthy, listen to instructions, be able to understand, and have courage. Also, the so-called eight branches are: As it is said: Body, children, demons, upper body, weapons and poisons, aging, corpses. Whatever healing is based on, that is called the eight branches. So it is said. So, how does this science of healing arise? There are four sources: In terms of the Buddha's teachings, in the Vinaya-mula's section on medicine, it is taught to divide medicine into four types and how to rely on them. In the Sutra of Golden Light, it says: Three months are summer, three months should be known as autumn, three months are winter, three months are spring. Thus, the order of the months is six seasons. And so on. In the tantras of secret mantra, the formation of the body is explained in detail, as well as how imbalances of its elements cause disease, and how to treat it with external and internal medicine. Second, the way of transmission from Brahma is: In the past, the powerful Asuras churned Mount Meru, using two Naga kings as churning ropes, and by churning the ocean, the sun and moon were first produced. Churning again, the ancestor of poison, Spra, and a burning fire arose, whose power filled the sky. At that time, Brahm

Then, Sapa said, "You are the ancestor of poison! You are the mother of poison!" After saying this, the flowing poison and the non-flowing poison, etc., each dissolved into themselves. After churning again, a vase full of nectar appeared, which was drunk by Ishvara, so it went to the throat and turned blue. When Brahma was holding it, Rahu threw the wheel-shaped weapon of his own merit, called the Four Vows Complete, hitting the forehead or cheek, and fainted for a long time. Recovering from that and regaining his memory, he thought of beneficial methods, recalling the medical scriptures he had heard from the Buddha before. From the wound, the first of the life Vedas emerged: ༀ་ཨ་ཐཱ། (Tibetan, Devanagari: ओम् अथ, Romanized Sanskrit: Om Atha, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, Now). Relying on this, the life Veda with branches appeared. As stated in the Moonlight, "The letters Om and the sound of Atha, these two previously emerged from the piercing of Brahma's cheeks, therefore these are auspicious." Thus, Brahma healed his own illness and showed it to Prajapati. He told it to the sons of the star Tara, the countless and the two with the stars. Those two told it to the lord of the gods, Indra, and thus it was transmitted to many divine sages. Third, the way it spread in India: When the Teacher was alive, the young son of King Rupin was healed by his own brother Ratnabhaya, and was healed by the king of medicine, Jivaka, who was a disciple of the human sage Constant Knowledge. In the chapter on healing in the Vinaya Pitaka, there is a detailed history of Shakyamuni Buddha being empowered as the king of medicine for healing illnesses, etc. In particular, in the sacred land, the pioneer of chariots, the teacher Asvaghosa, composed the Great Eight-Branched Treatise and its essence summary, etc. To this, the Kashmiri Chandraraja wrote the commentary Moonlight, and thus it was propagated. Fourth, how it spread in Tibet: The medical scriptures composed by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and divine human sages, from India and Hor Gesar, were translated into Tibetan by great translators such as Vairochana. The root and commentary of the Eight-Branched Treatise were translated and determined by Rinchen Zangpo. Relying on this, Yuthokpa the Great, Yonten Gonpo, who was no different from the Teacher, the Medicine Buddha, propagated the Four Tantras, famous as the sun and moon, and resided as the sustenance of the merit of beings.
