When asked where he came from, he replied, "From the South." When asked what Dharma he knew, he replied, "I know the grammar of Pāṇini, the Hymn to the Hundred and Fifty, and the Praise of the Names of Mañjuśrī." Although he humbly said that he only knew these three texts, in reality, he admitted to knowing everything. So, when asked if he was Candragomin, he replied, "That's what I'm known as in the world." They said, "It's not good that such a great scholar has suddenly arrived. The Sangha should welcome you, so please stay in the city for a while." He replied, "How can the Sangha welcome me, a lay practitioner?" They said, "There's a way." So, using three chariots, Mañjuśrī was placed in the middle one, and in the other two, two teachers fanned him with yak-tail fans, and the Sangha welcomed him from the front. This way, it would be considered welcoming Mañjuśrī. When they did so, Candragomin caused the image of Mañjuśrī to show his face, and he composed praises there. The image turned its face back to listen. At that time, everyone saw it and said, "That statue does that." This story spread, and it became known as "Mañjuśrī's Crooked-Neck Image." After that, Candragomin, relying on the tradition of Asaṅga, took the side of the Mind-Only school. Candrakīrti, relying on the texts of Nāgārjuna and the explanations of Buddhapālita and others, took the side of those who speak of emptiness of inherent existence. They debated for seven years. To watch that debate, many people constantly gathered, and even the village children and girls knew a little about the sides, singing: Alas, the texts of the noble Nāgārjuna, are medicine for some and poison for others. The texts of the invincible noble Asaṅga, are nectar for all beings. Candrakīrti thought, "There is someone here who doesn't want to learn debate." So he secretly followed Candragomin to a temple of Avalokiteśvara, and listened from outside the door. He saw the stone statue of Avalokiteśvara teaching the Dharma like a teacher teaching a student. (Candrakīrti thought) "Does the noble one have partiality?" So he opened the door, and the statue immediately turned into stone, with only the finger of the hand teaching the Dharma still raised, so it became known as "Avalokiteśvara's Raised-Finger Image." From that time on, the debate naturally subsided. After that, it was Nālandā.
