If mind-training doesn't settle between contemplation and post-contemplation, it seeks other practices. Some Geshes (Tibetan, dge bshes, 'spiritual friend') even if they don't know all the collections of scriptures, thinking that merely remembering death is not enough, go to married yogis. Similarly, some, fearing harm from spirits, only recite wrathful mantras. Sometimes they strive for the benefit of this life, and sometimes they practice for the next life, which is like riding two horses, and eventually falling off. Some say that practitioners don't need to count root downfalls, and don't need to confess downfalls, asking whether downfalls harm the body or the mind. Even when making offerings to the Three Jewels, they hope to be seen by others, or are happy when seen, thus breaking their vows. All of these are said to be wrong. So, what should be done here? Without letting the view affect the conduct, how does it arise from the Buddha's teachings through body and speech? How is it prescribed in the Vinaya? How does it arise from the instructions of the three, Jowo (Tibetan, jo bo, '尊者', referring to Atisha), Dromtönpa (Tibetan, ston pa, '导师'), and Potowa (Tibetan, po to ba, 博朵瓦)? Practice without diminishing or altering them, and train only in this thought. Furthermore, there are cases where conduct affects the view, and one is bound by the knots of conceptual thoughts. Also, some rely on mantra and discard Vinaya, or rely on Vinaya and discard mantra. The people of Sangpu Monastery (Tibetan, gsang phu ba, 桑浦寺) say, 'The trick of taking all the Dharma into a square shape did not come from my Indian guru.' If one doesn't thoroughly understand this, and doesn't grasp the key, some will think, 'He did that, so what was the result?' So, don't do that, but completely cut off addition and detraction, and take them into practice as union. All yogas of food, clothing, etc., are done through this. At the time of death, train the mind to let all the suffering of others' birth and death ripen on me. Abandon all thoughts of success or failure, and practice only this. 'Do not do perverse things,' which means, fearing that all patients will die, they perform ransom rituals, hoping that the patient will not die through the ransom ritual. Similarly, from the perspective of general Dharma, hoping to gain one's own happiness by taking on the suffering of others, or hoping to gain a lot by giving a little happiness to sentient beings. Just like Shapowa (Tibetan, sha po ba, 夏波瓦) boasts of being a practitioner, giving a little bit of 'Jasu' (Tibetan, ja sun, a type of food) scraps to all good practitioners, and then saying 'We are friends.' Or grasping at profitable residences, secretly seeking usury from patrons, or vaguely reciting 'Ati' (Tibetan, a ti, 无上瑜伽), hoping to be the best practitioner among these four, like looking for something useful among things blown away by the wind or washed away by water. Here is the Buddha's... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We need to examine the nature of things, how important it is, and what its main cause is, and then enhance and meditate through the key points. If not, like Nup Dalang Krazom, is this bad correctness the way the field of knowledge seeks? Or, 'I didn't do anything, and it turned out like this,' as they say, 'Oh, then we, master and servant, have become the same behavior.' If the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, are all done, and the Bumchok (vase empowerment) and Lhakhe (guru blessing) are all done, and the results all become the same behavior, then it will be blown away by the wind, so what should be done in this life? Do not cling to self, this is one thing that needs to be done. Therefore, this requires: the two are connected to life. This means: the common vows and the special vows. The first is: promising to take refuge, etc., and not violating the guru's vows, guarding them as if they were life. The second is: like An Chopa, engaging in mutual accusation of downfalls, and exchanging self and others in body and speech. As it is said here: do not speak of impaired limbs. And changing intentions, keeping the self. Etc., these all contradict this vow. Talking about downfalls is because focusing only on faults makes it impossible to train the mind. One must practice the vows of refuge, etc., in body and speech without wavering or diminishing. Therefore, this requires: liberation from thinking and analysis. This means: observe which of the afflictions in your own mind is the strongest, and then especially rely on its antidote, striving to eliminate it. Furthermore, they say that for past mistakes, and if something similar happens in the future, think, 'I will rely on this antidote,' thus putting on armor and acting. For past events, whether it is illness, harm from demons, not finding friends, cold, theft, or beatings, all the harm that has occurred, train the mind so that all debts, retribution, and blood feuds from beginningless time are cleared away. For the future, if they send you there starting tonight or tomorrow morning, like 'I am here,' if they slander me, frame me, drive me out of here, or if severe illness occurs, think, 'I will meditate on this Bodhicitta of exchanging self and others,' thus putting on armor. As Potowa said, a woman selling things came to us with a child, Chennga-wa seemed unhappy, while Phuchungwa said, I would rather die than live. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
