Like a poison, meditate by combining the past and the future. By the liberation of concepts and analysis, one should suppress the arising of self-grasping. Moreover, since only one thought can arise at a time, one must practice like cutting through nails and iron. The so-called 'cutting through nails and iron' is like cutting off the root of a disease in surgery. As soon as afflictions arise, one must destroy them thoroughly with antidotes without hesitation or delay. Moreover, in order not to mix with self-interest, one must avoid poisonous food. The so-called 'avoiding poisonous food' is like nourishing the body with good food, but if it is mixed with poison, one will die. Bodhicitta gives rise to Buddhahood, but if it is mixed with clinging to reality, it will produce the suffering of samsara, so it is like poisonous food. Furthermore, the happiness of gods and humans in future lives, and the happiness of liberation of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, are all poisons for the practice of Bodhicitta, so they should be abandoned. Moreover, one should not harbor malice towards others because one wants to be happy. The so-called 'do not seek suffering on the branch of happiness' is like when an enemy dies, one is no longer threatened; when a relative dies, one expects to receive his property; when a great practitioner friend dies, one expects to gain more merit in that place, and so on. Also, like householders, one expects to be happy from the four kinds of agricultural activities. All these are seeking suffering because one wants to be happy. Geshe Tangpa's doctor, Lama Jotsun Rinchen Jang, poured out all the yogurt offered by the patrons, thinking that he would get more, so he killed a female yak, and as a result, the offerings of yogurt and so on were all cut off. In the summer, the yak went to the fields, and close people became estranged. Like this, there are many things that seek suffering on the branch of happiness, and they should all be avoided. If all sentient beings are happy and joyful, that is called a good thought, and one should do that. All these methods are taught for the practice of conventional Bodhicitta. Now, the wisdom part, which is the practice of ultimate Bodhicitta, is briefly explained. 'After gaining stability, then reveal the secret.' This means that in order to practice ultimate Bodhicitta, there are three parts: preliminary, main practice, and concluding practice. First is the preliminary: In the shrine room, offer offerings to the Buddhas and Lamas, and pray. In the meditation room, sit comfortably on a cushion in the lotus position, and count twenty-one breaths. Then, make the body, speech, and mind suitable vessels for meditation. After that, first generate conventional Bodhicitta, and then enter the main practice: all these should be done simultaneously.

It is like this, even if you simultaneously meditate on the emptiness of all real things, during the practice, you should calculate and arrange the wisdom of separately knowing according to the order. It is said that this is to allow the moisture of tranquility to give rise to the sprout of realization. First, contemplate the object of grasping as being without inherent existence, as the scripture says: 'View all phenomena as dreams.' This means that all the appearances of the external and internal world are merely the appearances of one's own deluded mind. Apart from this, there is not even a particle of real existence that is different from the mind. If you observe with wisdom, you will be convinced that there is no real reason. Then, contemplate the grasper as being without inherent existence, as the scripture says: 'Act in the nature of unborn awareness.' This means that this mind is also, the past has ceased, the future is unborn, and the present also has three parts, and it does not exist here. Properties such as color, shape, and volume are not universally established, but are unborn. Then, contemplate all phenomena as being without inherent existence, as the scripture says: 'The antidote is also liberated in its own place.' This means that the very mind that acts as an antidote to contemplating all objects and minds as emptiness is itself not established, so there is no knowable that can be combined with the object and mind, because the two have been contemplated as being without inherent existence. In this way, for things that are universally not established, relax and do not cling to anything, keep awareness clear and undistracted, and do not let it be affected by sinking and agitation, but keep it in a state of alertness. As the scripture shows: 'The nature of the path abides in the ālaya, the seven mental events are discriminations, and should be abandoned.' The root of all phenomena is also, the base (藏文:ཀུན་གཞི,梵文天城体:ālaya,梵文罗马拟音:ālaya,汉语字面意思:ground) is unspeakable, unthinkable, inexpressible, and free from elaboration, so abandon it as it abides in the base. You should abide and practice in this way. The various seven mental events are discriminations, so do not let the discriminating consciousness freely grasp objects, but when any discrimination arises, use awareness to observe it and relax it into the nature of reality. Afterwards, for any discrimination that arises, you should also use awareness to observe awareness, and relax and liberate it into the nature of reality.' This also means that the duration of each session should be shortened, but the number of sessions should be increased, just as the scripture says: 'Shortening the duration of each session and combining the end is the best way.' In terms of post-meditation activities, as the scripture says: 'In between sessions, contemplate as an illusory person.' This means that the five aggregates, the six senses, and the four actions, all of these are appearances of the assembly of interdependent relationships, and you should know them as being like illusions. Do not follow after clinging to reality and emotions such as attachment and aversion, generate compassion for unenlightened beings, and do not abandon the practice of samadhi. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
