'One should think of generating [it].' 'Take the three main causes,' which means: finding a qualified Lama (teacher) who possesses complete qualities, has realization, is not disturbed by ordinary people, and keeping [him] in mind; how one's own mind thinks from leisure and endowment to selflessness; or how it arises in one's own mindstream as the Lama guides; as well as the favorable conditions for Dharma practice; faith; wisdom; diligence; great renunciation; clothing, food, and servants, etc., all complete. These three are the main causes for practicing Dharma, so if one possesses them, one should happily practice and especially strive. If one does not possess them, one should think: in the world, there are countless people like me who cannot practice Dharma due to not possessing these three causes, how pitiful. Take them all upon oneself, and by offering one's own body, etc., cause them to also possess these three causes, thereby enjoying the Great Vehicle. 'Cultivate the three non-degradations,' which means: all the Dharma of the Great Vehicle depends on the disciple's faith and respect, therefore, one should always maintain the perception of the Lama as a Buddha and not be separated from it. Through this way, one's faith and respect for the Lama will not degrade. Furthermore, thinking that mind training is the essence of the Great Vehicle, like a potent seed of Buddhahood, do not mix it with other Dharmas, but diligently practice it, so that the interest in mind training will not degrade. For the promises and vows of the Great and Small Vehicles, one should guard them with the great strength of shame and embarrassment, not being defiled by even the slightest faults, and learn with diligence, so that one does not degrade. 'One should possess the three inseparables,' which means: the body should not be separated from serving the Lama, offering to the Three Jewels, offering torma (ritual cakes) to the Dharma protectors and spirits, prostrations, circumambulations, and other virtuous actions of the body. Speech should not be separated from taking refuge, recitations, and readings, and other virtuous actions of speech. The mind should not be separated from cultivating the two aspects of Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment), and one should possess inconceivable courage to destroy afflictive thoughts such as clinging to self. In short, the three doors of body, speech, and mind should not be separated from practicing virtuous Dharma at all times. 'Always train in what is provoked,' which means: the hatred of regarding one's enemy as a real opponent arises from constant association, as it is said: 'It arises from the basis of constant companionship.' Therefore, on the one hand, one should abide in this, and on the other hand, even if the other person does not harm oneself, one should... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Especially towards those who are unpleasant, neither friendly nor likeable, be particularly mindful, as you are likely to lose the opportunity to train your mind. Treat them like your heart's treasure and train your mind. Furthermore, Lamas (bla ma, Sanskrit: guru, teacher), parents, and Bodhisattvas (byang chub sems dpa', Sanskrit: bodhisattva, enlightenment being) are powerful objects. If you commit negative actions towards them, the karmic consequences will be unimaginable. Therefore, be particularly mindful and purify. Do not depend on other conditions. This means that to practice other Dharmas, you need favorable conditions such as food, clothing, good health, suitable environment, and freedom from disturbances. However, to practice mind training, you do not need to depend on these conditions. The absence of these favorable conditions is actually the cause for this Dharma. Now, let us only take virtuous actions as companions for mind training. Now, the most important thing is to practice. Because from beginningless time, we have been wandering in the three lower realms like old beggars. Now, we have obtained a precious human body, which is difficult to find even in millions of eons. Therefore, now the most important thing is to practice Dharma for future lives, rather than being busy with worldly pleasures. Among the three practices of listening, contemplation, and meditation, practice is the most important. Among all practices, the practice of cultivating Bodhicitta (byang chub kyi sems, Sanskrit: bodhicitta, mind of enlightenment) is the most important. Moreover, rather than practicing through logical analysis, it is more important to rely on the instructions of the Lama and make every effort to practice the antidotes. Among all actions, the most important is to practice while sitting in bed. Rather than avoiding crowds, it is more important to practice in crowds. Cherish these teachings. Do not reverse. This means avoiding six reversals. Being unable to endure the suffering of practicing Dharma, but being able to endure the hardships of taking care of relatives and conquering enemies, is a reversal of patience. Not desiring to eliminate negative karma and perfect accumulations, but viewing worldly perfections as virtues and desiring to obtain them, is a reversal of desire. Striving to listen, contemplate, and meditate, but not experiencing the taste of Dharma, instead tasting worldly desires, recalling past pleasures and conquering enemies, is a reversal of taste. Not cultivating compassion for beings who are in suffering and the causes of suffering, but practicing asceticism and cultivating compassion for the wealthy who are suffering in their practice, is a reversal of compassion. Accumulating wealth, taking care of relatives, and pursuing worldly glory, but not striving to practice Dharma, is a... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
