whose power I do not currently possess. Moreover, neither the Śrāvakas (those who attain enlightenment by hearing the Buddha's teachings) nor the Pratyekabuddhas (those who attain enlightenment independently), nor the cakravartin (wheel-turning king) with a thousand spokes, nor the Bodhisattvas (beings who aspire to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings) abiding on the ground possess it. Then who does possess it? Only the Three Jewels (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་རྣམ་པ་གསུམ་, referring to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) possess it. Therefore, in order to liberate sentient beings from suffering and establish them in unsurpassed bliss, taking refuge is the cause. Fifth, how does one take refuge? By taking refuge in the manner of regarding the Lama (Tibetan: བླ་མ་) as the guide, the Buddha (Tibetan: སངས་རྒྱས་) as the actual path, and the Sangha (Tibetan: དགེ་འདུན་) as the companions who accomplish the path. Among these, when taking refuge in the Lama, the object to be purified is: one's own afflictions, such as the three poisons of desire, hatred, and ignorance, and all the non-virtuous actions accumulated through the doors of body, speech, and mind, arising from these afflictions. The method of purification is: by taking refuge in the Lama, contemplating the attainment of the fourth empowerment. The result of purification is: the defilements of body, speech, and mind are purified, and the Dharmakaya (Tibetan: ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་ཀྱི་སྐུ་) is attained. When taking refuge in the Buddha, the object to be purified is: all the obscurations accumulated through the door of mind, arising from hatred. The method of purification is: by taking refuge in the Buddha, contemplating the attainment of the empowerment of wisdom (Tibetan: ཤེས་རབ་, Sanskrit: Prajñā) and wisdom (Tibetan: ཡེ་ཤེས་, Sanskrit: Jñāna). The result of purification is: the defilements of mind are purified, and the Dharmakaya (Tibetan: ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ་) of the Buddha Jewel is attained. When taking refuge in the Dharma, the object to be purified is: all the obscurations accumulated through the door of speech, arising from desire. The method of purification is: by taking refuge in the Dharma, contemplating the attainment of the secret empowerment. The result of purification is: the defilements of speech are purified, and the Sambhogakaya (Tibetan: ལོངས་སྤྱོད་རྫོགས་པའི་སྐུ་) of the Dharma Jewel is attained. When taking refuge in the Sangha, the object to be purified is: all the obscurations accumulated through the door of body, arising from ignorance. The method of purification is: by taking refuge in the Sangha Jewel, contemplating the attainment of the vase empowerment. The result of purification is: the defilements of body are purified, and the state of the Nirmanakaya (Tibetan: སྤྲུལ་སྐུའི་གོ་འཕངས་) of the Sangha Jewel is attained. Through remembering these meanings, as it is said in the scriptures: 'I take refuge in the glorious and venerable Lamas (Tibetan: དཔལ་ལྡན་བླ་མ་དམ་པ་རྣམས་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆིའོ།), I take refuge in the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, the Bhagavat (Tibetan: རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་རྣམས་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆིའོ།), I take refuge in the sacred Dharma (Tibetan: དམ་པའི་ཆོས་རྣམས་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆིའོ།), I take refuge in the noble Sangha (Tibetan: འཕགས་པའི་དགེ་འདུན་རྣམས་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆིའོ།).' Thus, one recites. Among these, 'glorious' (Tibetan: དཔལ་ལྡན་) refers to possessing the glory of the two accumulations (Tibetan: ཚོགས་གཉིས་, referring to the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom). 'Lama' (Tibetan: བླ་མ་) refers to the one who carries the heavy burden of qualities. 'Sacred' (Tibetan: དམ་པ་) refers to through the means of empowerment and so on... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is following (the Three Jewels). 3-368 'Etc.' this plural word, refers to taking refuge in all the Lamas who have received the grace of the sacred Dharma through a single word, etc. 'Complete' means that all the qualities of abandonment and realization are complete. 'Buddha' means awakening from the sleep of ignorance and increasing wisdom to understand all knowable things. As it is said in the scriptures: 'Awakening from the sleep of ignorance, increasing wisdom in what is to be known, like a lotus blooming is Buddhahood.' 'Bhagavan' means subduing the four maras and possessing the six qualities of power. The word 'passed' is a respectful addition made by the translators. 'Etc.' is a plural word and is easy to understand. For the Dharma, 'supreme' means being able to purify the defilements of oneself and other beings to be tamed, and leading them to the state of Buddhahood. This refers to all the Buddha's teachings, while other non-Buddhist teachings cannot do this. For the Sangha, 'noble' refers to those who gradually progress from ordinary beings to the stages of joining and application. 'Sangha' means gathering all the roots of virtue. 'Taking refuge' or 'having taken refuge' means taking refuge in order to be protected from the suffering of samsara. Having taken refuge in this way as many times as possible, from 'Lama' to 'Please bless my lineage', recite according to the ritual. Based on this, visualize the essence of the Sangha Jewel, that is, the goddesses of the retinue, dissolving into white light and merging into your forehead, thereby obtaining the vase empowerment, purifying the defilements of the body, and transforming the body into the essence of the Sangha Jewel or the Nirmanakaya. Visualize the essence of the Dharma Jewel behind you, that is, the scriptures, dissolving into red light and merging into your throat, thereby obtaining the secret empowerment, purifying the defilements of speech, and transforming speech into the essence of the Dharma Jewel or the Sambhogakaya. Visualize the main deity in the center dissolving into blue light and merging into your heart, thereby obtaining the wisdom-jnana empowerment, purifying the defilements of mind, and transforming the mind into the essence of the Buddha Jewel or the Dharmakaya. Based on this, visualize the entire inside of the body filled with white, red, and blue light, and based on this, the bliss-emptiness jnana arises in your mindstream, thereby obtaining the fourth empowerment, purifying the defilements of body, speech, and mind, and obtaining the Svabhavikakaya. 3-369 ༄། །Generating Bodhicitta. Secondly, generating Bodhicitta. In detail, as the scripture says: 'With the thought of liberating beings,' 3-370 etc., two verses. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
