On the throne, visualize eight goddesses, with the main deity behind Vaitāli, and in front, a brocade seat upon which scriptures are piled like a mountain of rocks, adorned with elaborate silks and veils. 3-362 As it says in the text: 'The essence of the body, speech, mind, qualities, and activities of all the Tathāgatas of the ten directions and three times, the source of the eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma, the master of all noble Sangha.' Therefore, all objects of refuge are gathered into the mandala of the Vajra Nine Deities and the scriptures. It is necessary to meditate in this way: the ten directions are the four directions, the eight intermediate directions, and the upper and lower directions, including all the Buddhas residing in those places. The three times are all the Buddhas of the past, all the Buddhas who will appear in the future, and all the Buddhas who are presently abiding. Tathāgata means that they have gone to bliss from the path of bliss, hence they are the Tathāgatas who have gone to bliss. The body of that very Tathāgata is Vairochana, the speech is Amitābha, the mind is Akshobhya, the qualities are Ratnasambhava, and the activities are Amoghasiddhi. In short, all the Buddhas are gathered into the five families, and they are the source of all Dharmas and the master of all Sangha. Moreover, the root and lineage gurus are inseparable from this. 3-363 Meditating that the Bhagavan Hevajra in the center is inseparable from the guru is the guru and the Buddha Jewel. The Dharma is all the scriptures, both the teachings and the realizations, gathered into the form of scriptures, which is the Dharma Jewel. The Sangha is the Sangha of the three vehicles. Although the Shravakas consider the Sangha to be the four pairs and eight individuals, here, the Sangha refers to all monks from novices to fully ordained monks and those older than them. In the context of the Mahayana Paramita, the Bodhisattva Sangha refers to the irreversible Bodhisattvas, but here, it refers to lay practitioners who hold the Bodhisattva vows and are older than oneself. In the Mantrayana, although it is explained as individuals who have generated the wisdom of example in their continuum, here, it refers to all those who have fully received the Mantrayana vows and have not broken them, and who are older than oneself. Visualizing such a Sangha gathered into the retinue goddesses is the Sangha Jewel, the object of refuge. Fourth, the reasons for taking refuge are fear, faith, and compassion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am the master, and here are three (methods): The first is about fear. The fear of the suffering of samsara, the fear of focusing on one's own interests, the fear of clinging to ordinary appearances, and the fear arising from attachment to excellent deities. First, regarding the fear of samsara, generally it is the fear of samsara, and specifically it is the fear of this life, the bardo, and future lives. The first fear is merely cognitive. The second fear, in order to avoid obstacles to practicing the Dharma in this life, such as illnesses and evil spirits that interrupt life, as well as bad circumstances at the time of death and intense end-of-life care and severe illnesses, needs (practice). The third is the fear of the bardo, in order to be liberated from all the fears of the bardo, such as the four terrifying sounds, etc. The fourth is the fear of future lives, in order to be liberated from bad situations such as the eight states of unfreedom in future lives, bad friends, bad officials, bad teachers, bad treatises, bad lineages, etc., in short, all factors that contradict the true Dharma. The second is about faith. Aspiring faith, clear faith, and confident faith. The first is aspiring faith, seeing the qualities of the Buddha and thinking, 'I must also attain such achievements,' and taking refuge with strong aspiration. The second is clear faith, which is faith in the qualities of the Three Jewels. That is, (believing that the Three Jewels) possess the wisdom of knowing things as they are and as many as they are, the great compassion of loving all sentient beings as if they were their only child, and the ability to liberate sentient beings from all the sufferings of samsara. Through seeing such qualities, taking refuge with faith that arises without artificiality. The third is confident faith, generally believing in all the teachings spoken by the Buddha, especially believing that if one commits evil deeds, one will wander in samsara and experience suffering; if one abandons evil and practices virtue, one can attain liberation and nirvana, which are endowed with wisdom, compassion, and power. Therefore, believing in such laws of karma, taking them up with faith, abandoning evil and practicing virtue, one must take refuge. Because the Three Jewels also arise from such causes, one takes refuge in order to attain the state of the Three Jewels oneself. The third is about compassion. All sentient beings in the three realms are all one's own kind parents, and one must liberate them from this intense and long-lasting suffering of samsara. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
