Debater: According to the teacher's view, the stages of heat, peak, forbearance, and supreme worldly qualities of the path of joining, as taught in the context of 'noble Hearer's path,' etc., and 'not contradicting the observed nature of reality,' etc., should be the path of joining of the Great Vehicle, because according to the teacher's view, Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the selflessness of phenomena. If you accept this, then according to the teacher's view, in this second instance, a single definitive discriminating factor that serves as the cause of the path of seeing of the Great Vehicle should be explicitly taught. If you accept this, it contradicts the Great Commentary, which states, 'The suchness and the Buddhas,' etc., where it says that the definitive discriminating factor of this path of seeing should be understood from what is taught in the first instance. Furthermore, Debater: In the phrase 'the inconceivable nature of the power of wisdom that is well-grasped by the Perfectly Complete Buddha, etc.,' the mention of 'the power of wisdom that is well-grasped by the Perfectly Complete Buddha, etc.,' should not require any distinction, because the path of seeing of Hearers and Solitary Realizers does not realize the nature of the truth of suffering as inconceivable. If it does not pervade, then what is its distinction? If you accept this, then the teacher is unwise in terms of the statement of that phrase. Furthermore, Debater: According to the teacher's view, the Hearers' and Solitary Realizers' foundational consciousness does not realize the twenty-seven meanings of non-existence, etc., because the Hearers' and Solitary Realizers' foundational consciousness grasps samsara and nirvana as signs. If you accept this, then it contradicts 'That all-knowingness is of Hearers and Bodhisattvas,' etc. Furthermore, Hearers and Solitary Realizers should not have the four mindfulnesses, the four correct abandonments, the four legs of miraculous power, and the limbs of enlightenment in their continuums, because Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not know the reality of the four truths in their continuums. If it is not established, then it is established that the Hearers' and Solitary Realizers' mother foundational consciousness is grasping samsara and nirvana as signs. Some say: Hearers and Solitary Realizers know that all phenomena do not have inherent existence. Some say: If Hearers and Solitary Realizers know that all phenomena do not have inherent existence, then in the explanation of 'The ultimate truth of the self-born is to be realized by faith, like the blazing orb of the sun, which the blind cannot see,' these four types of individuals are established as not having the eye to see the essence of the Thus-Gone One, these four are: ordinary beings, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas newly entering the Great Vehicle, this contradicts that. If someone says this, then its meaning is that the heart essence of the Sugata -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ལ། 3-675

Regarding the essence of Dharmakāya (chos sku), there are three: the essence of transcendence, the essence of purity. The statement 'without eyes' refers to not having the eye consciousness to directly realize the essence of transcendence. It does not mean not having the eye consciousness to realize all Tathāgatagarbha (bde bar gshegs pa'i snying po). As stated in the commentary on the Uttaratantra (gyud bla'i 'grel pa): 'As the Dharmakāya is the essence of transcendence, it is not the realm of those who delight in inversion.' Because the transcendent Dharmakāya is taught to counteract impermanence and other worldly phenomena. Some say: 'By realizing the absence of a self (bdag med, anātman) that is permanent, singular, and independent, one can abandon afflictions.' Others say: 'By realizing the absence of a self that is permanent, singular, and independent, one can abandon afflictions, but it is not necessary to realize the selflessness (rang bzhin med pa, niḥsvabhāva) of the aggregates (phung po, skandha) in order to abandon all afflictions.' If this is the case, then as stated in the Madhyamakāvatāra ('jug pa): 'Those sentient beings who have spent countless eons in animal realms have not seen this unborn, permanent self.' Therefore, merely realizing the absence of a self that is permanent, singular, and independent cannot abandon afflictions. Because even those who have been born as animals for countless eons, although they do not have the clinging to a self that is permanent, singular, and independent, still have strong afflictions. Merely realizing the absence of a self that is permanent, singular, and independent cannot abandon all afflictions, because it does not harm the innate clinging to self (lhan skyes kyi 'jig lta). See the Madhyamakāvatāra for details. Others say that if Pratyekabuddhas (rang sangs rgyas) realize the selflessness of what is grasped, they should be able to abandon the grasping thoughts ('dzin rtog), but they cannot abandon them, as it says: 'Because they do not abandon grasping.' If this is the case, then bodhisattvas who have attained the path of seeing (mthong lam, Darśanamārga), in the moment of suffering dharma forbearance (sdug bsngal chos bzod), should be able to abandon the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing (mthong spangs) regarding wrong views on suffering, origin, cessation, and path, because they have realized the selflessness of suffering, origin, cessation, and path. If this is admitted, then it would mean that there is no need to cultivate the antidotes to the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing regarding wrong views on suffering, origin, cessation, and path. Furthermore, if realizing the selflessness of any phenomenon can abandon the clinging to that phenomenon, then it should be possible to abandon all clinging on the path of seeing, and the path of meditation (sgom lam, Bhāvanāmārga) would be meaningless. The words 'by the antidote to the view of self of phenomena itself' and 'because it possesses the general cause' are to refute the views of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. In the Middle Length Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra (yum bar ma), when discussing 'the nature of reality that is unapprehended,' it says: 'Shariputra, the great bodhisattvas...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
