Collection of Teachings from Ancient Sakya Scholars KH13 'Distinguishing the Realizations of the Three Holy Ones' 3-661 'Distinguishing the Realizations of the Three Holy Ones' Some who consider themselves wise claim that, according to the tradition of Maitreya (Byams chos), Hearers (nyan) and Solitary Realizers (rang) do not realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena (chos kyi bdag med). May there be well-being): Having skillfully taught the reality of knowledge as it is, causing the lotus garden of correct view (yang dag lta ba) to flourish, and satisfying with the essence of the nectar of definitive meaning (nges don), I take upon my head the dust of the feet of the supreme guide. Here, some who consider themselves wise claim that, according to the tradition of Maitreya, Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena, and that Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not abandoned all clinging thoughts (gzung rtog) of afflictive obscurations (nyon mongs pa) and cognitive obscurations (shes sgrib), which is a contradictory statement. And some say that, according to the tradition of Maitreya, Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena, but according to the tradition of Nagarjuna (Klu sgrub), they do. To dispel these people's wrong conceptions, I will elaborate by spreading the light of scripture and reasoning: Bodhisattva (byang sems) on the Path of Seeing (mthong lam pa), you, with the power of the wisdom that realizes the nature of reality, are able to overpower the Arhats (dgra bcom pa) of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Because the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not realized that all phenomena are without inherent existence (rang bzhin ma dmigs pa), while you directly realize that all phenomena are without inherent existence. If you accept this, then knowledge is like a prince (rgyal po'i bu) who, not long after being born, possesses the title of king, and he is able to overpower the ministers (blon po'i tshogs rgan po), mainly the elder ones, by virtue of his knowledge of the law. 3-662 If you accept that, then knowledge is like the Blessed One (bcom ldan 'das) combining these two metaphors and meanings in his teaching, which is unreasonable because the metaphor and the meaning do not correspond. You cannot accept that, because the Blessed One said in the Tenth Ground Sutra (sa bcu pa): 'O sons of the Victorious Ones (rgyal ba'i sras dag), for example, a prince born into a royal family, possessing the title of king, merely by being born overpowers all the ministers by the power of the king, but not by discriminating with the power of his own intelligence. When he grows up, by developing the power of his own intelligence, he far surpasses all the deeds of the ministers. O sons of the Victorious Ones, likewise, a Bodhisattva, as soon as they generate Bodhicitta (byang chub sems), by their great superior intention (lhag pa'i bsam pa), overpower all the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, but not by discriminating with the power of their own intelligence. A Bodhisattva abiding on the seventh ground, by abiding in the greatness of their own field of knowledge, surpasses the Hearers and Solitary Realizers.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'[They are] exceedingly beyond all acts of increase.' Furthermore, the *Liberation of Maitreya* states: 'Son of good family, just as when a king's son is born and not long after possesses the name of king, all the ministers, with the elders as their chief, are subdued by the power of his great lineage. Similarly, a Bodhisattva who is a beginner, not long after generating the mind of enlightenment, because he is born into the lineage of the Tathagata, the king of Dharma, through the power of the mind of enlightenment and compassion, subdues those Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who have long practiced celibacy.' Furthermore, a Shravaka Arhat, in and of himself, should not have abandoned all the afflictions in his own continuum, because he has not realized that the essence of the bases, aggregates, and elements is empty. This is pervasive. As stated in the *Pramanavarttika*: 'Without refuting this object, one cannot abandon it.' Furthermore, in and of himself, he should not have realized the selflessness of persons, because he clings to the aggregates, which are the basis for the imputation of a self, as truly existent. In and of himself, an ego-grasping that focuses on the five aggregates should arise in your continuum, because you cling to the five aggregates as truly existent. If you accept this, then in and of himself, afflictions such as attachment and the actions motivated by them should arise in your continuum. If you accept this, then in and of himself, you should be born in samsara due to the power of karma and afflictions. Furthermore, in and of himself, through seeing that the five aggregates are separate from the three times of arising and ceasing, the grasping of the five aggregates as non-existent, and the karma and afflictions motivated by this, and the birth arising from their power, should also not be exhausted, because you have not realized that the five aggregates are separate from the three times of arising and ceasing. The former and latter are pervasive, and it is impossible to deny. As stated in the *Precious Garland*: 'As long as there is grasping of the aggregates, there is grasping of self. As long as there is grasping of self, there is karma. From karma, there is birth again. The three paths are without beginning, end, or middle. The wheel of samsara is like a wheel of fire, mutually causing each other, revolving in this samsara.' It also says: 'Because one does not see self or others or the three times, ego-grasping is exhausted, and from this, karma and birth are also exhausted.' Furthermore, in and of himself, he should have realized that the five aggregates are like bubbles and so forth, because he has abandoned all the afflictions in his own continuum. This is pervasive. As stated in the *Shravaka Sutra*: 'Shravakas...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
