Although there are emptiness (Śūnyatā), signlessness (Animitta), and wishlessness (Apraṇihita), if they are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajñāpāramitā) and not grasped by skillful means, then the true limit will be manifested, and one will become a Hearer (Śrāvaka). Śāriputra inquired: 'Venerable One, for what reason is it that those who cultivate emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, but are separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and lack skillful means, manifest the true limit and become Hearers; while Bodhisattvas, relying on the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, cultivate emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and thereby manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment (Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi)?' The Venerable One replied: 'Śāriputra, some here, separated from the mind of all-knowingness (Sarvākārajñatā), cultivate certain dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and relying on unskillful means, become Hearers. Śāriputra, those great Bodhisattvas who are not separated from the mind of all-knowingness cultivate the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and through skillful means, enter the faultless path of Bodhisattvas, manifestly awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' Śāriputra, for example, a bird might have a body of one hundred yojanas, or two hundred yojanas, or three hundred yojanas, or four hundred yojanas, or five hundred yojanas. It thinks of going from the heaven of the Thirty-three (Trāyastriṃśa) to Jambudvīpa. That bird has no wings. Thinking, 'I shall go to Jambudvīpa,' it jumps down from the heaven of the Thirty-three. If, on the way, that bird thinks, 'Alas, I should remain in the heaven of the Thirty-three,' Śāriputra, what do you think? Is that bird able to remain in the heaven of the Thirty-three later?' Śāriputra replied, 'Venerable One, it is not.' The Venerable One said, 'If, on the way, it thinks, 'Alas, I must somehow remain unharmed and undamaged in Jambudvīpa,' Śāriputra, what do you think? Will that bird remain unharmed and undamaged in Jambudvīpa?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sariputra asked: 'Bhagavan, it is not so! Bhagavan, if it were to fall into Jambudvipa (the human world), it would also cause a mark of injury. What is the reason for this? Bhagavan, because its body is so large, yet it has no wings, and it jumps from such a distant place, it is bound to become like this. Bhagavan should not think like this!' The Bhagavan replied: 'Sariputra, just as Bodhisattvas give alms, uphold the precepts, practice patience, exert diligence, and engage in meditation for kalpas (aeons) as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, with the intention of attaining unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, their aspiration is also great, and their accumulation is also great. However, if they lack Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom) and skillful means, they will fall into the Sravaka (Hearer) ground or the Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Realizer) ground.' 'What is the reason for this? Because the Bodhisattva does not give alms, uphold the precepts, practice patience, exert diligence, or engage in meditation with the mind of knowing all things. Therefore, the Bodhisattva, lacking Prajnaparamita and skillful means, will fall into the Sravaka ground or the Pratyekabuddha ground. Sariputra, regarding the precepts, samadhi (concentration), wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation of the Buddhas of the past, future, and present, even if the Bodhisattva remembers, upholds, and regards them as characteristics, they do not truly understand the precepts of the Buddhas, do not understand samadhi, do not understand wisdom, do not understand the knowledge of liberation.' 'Because they do not understand the inner meaning of wisdom, they attain the tranquility of emptiness (Sunyata), signlessness (Animitta), and wishlessness (Apranihita) Nirvana. They regard these tranquil states as characteristics, cling to these characteristics, and dedicate the merit to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. However, the Bodhisattva who dedicates in this way will abide in the Sravaka ground or the Pratyekabuddha ground. Sariputra, what is the reason for this? Because they lack Prajnaparamita and skillful means, they do not dedicate the roots of virtue to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, they will fall into the Sravaka ground or the Pratyekabuddha ground.' Furthermore, some people, according to the teachings of Maitreya, believe that Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize the absence of self of phenomena (Dharmanairatmya). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
