Thus it is taught. There are five aspects: recognizing dreams, increasing dreams, and purifying dreams. Firstly, to send forth the conceptualization of dreams in advance: All dharmas are like dreams. Whatever happiness arises is like a dream. Yesterday's enjoyment of the five desirable qualities and what was experienced in a dream last night are no different today. Therefore, whatever happiness arises is like a dream. Whatever suffering arises is also like a dream. The many physical and mental sufferings experienced yesterday and what was experienced in a dream last night are no different today. Therefore, whatever suffering arises is like a dream. Furthermore, yesterday eating mouthfuls of food as delicious as the nectar of the gods, or having one's head sliced to pieces by a razor, or one's body cut by swords, and so on, and what was experienced in a dream last night are no different today. Therefore, all dharmas are like dreams. Since all dharmas are like dreams, one should dream a dream in segments. The dream should be wondrous, such as fire blazing from above and water gushing from below, or trampling the sun and moon with one's feet, or meeting Jowo Naropa (Lord Naropa, ཇོ་བོ་ནཱ་རོ་པ་, is an honorific title for Naropa), or seeing the face of one's own Yidam deity, and so on. Even if that doesn't work, because this practice is very important, one should repeatedly generate the intention, 'I must recognize that this is a dream while dreaming.' The method to make sleep come when it doesn't: The method to make sleep come when it doesn't is: to visualize in the throat a four-petaled lotus with a navel. There is a way to write letters on it and gather the mind, but that doesn't work in practice. So, visualize between the eyebrows a white, shimmering, oily, and round spot the size of a pea. Focus the mind on that, without letting it wander elsewhere. The method to recognize a dream as a dream: The method to recognize a dream as a dream is: dreaming due to the power of habit. For example, if one watches a great spectacle today, one might dream of horse races, blowing conches, raising flags, and so on. If the consciousness is too tense, one cannot fall asleep. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Similarly, due to the power of previous aspirations, during the time of dreaming, one can recognize that the dream is a dream. That is, if one dreams of a dog or a woman, one will think, 'This is a dream dog, this is a dream woman.' **Expanding the Dream** Expanding the dream is: multiplying what is dreamed, one into two, two into four, and so on, repeatedly expanding, and visualizing the entire world filled. **Purifying the Dream** Purifying the dream is: visualizing the external container world as a palace, and all sentient beings within as one's own Yidam deity and consort. At that time, the experience that arises is said to be the Guru's instructions. The great Guru said: 'What I myself have practiced and what I have had others practice are all consistent. First, cultivate the recognition of the dream, and then take the method of not sleeping. When one is able to recognize the dream in the dream, the experience of bliss and emptiness will arise in the continuum.' He said: 'Expanding and purifying are both branches of it.' Therefore, in the dream Bardo, combine the dream with meditation.’ These two practices are the practices until death. [The experience of bliss and emptiness arises spontaneously] These two experiences are like the moon appearing in the sky through the clouds. When the clouds dissipate and the moon appears in the sky, it becomes clear if a beginner practices, and it does not become clear if one does not practice.] That is, during the time of not sleeping, practice the completion stage of the channels and winds; during the time of sleeping, practice the completion stage of the dream. If both can produce experience, then practice both. If neither can produce experience, but Tummo (Inner Heat) and others can produce experience, then stop practicing the dream and practice Tummo. If the dream and others can produce experience, then stop practicing Tummo and practice the dream. In this way, it is fine whether both can produce experience or only one can produce experience. It is difficult to generate experience without the union of Shamatha (calm abiding) and Vipassana (insight). In any case, there must be an experience of the union of Shamatha and Vipassana.’ **Combining the Sridpa Bardo with Clear Light** Combining the experience of Shamatha and Vipassana with the Sridpa Bardo has three aspects: First, relying on the clear light of death in the first Bardo, recognizing the Dharmakaya (Body of Truth); second, relying on the pure and impure illusory body in the second Bardo, recognizing the Sambhogakaya (Body of Enjoyment) [Sridpa Bardo]; third, closing the doors of the six realms. **Relying on the First Bardo, the Clear Light of Death, to Recognize the Dharmakaya** Among these, relying on the first Bardo, the clear light of death --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
