Moreover, if two situations that contradict the scriptures are taken as one key point, then no one can eliminate this contradiction. 2-319 Regarding contradictions with scriptures, there are two types: contradictions of commitments where prior and subsequent commitments conflict, and contradictions of self-utterances where the expressed content directly or indirectly conflicts. Self-utterance contradictions also have two such types. If one can understand these distinctions, then the difficult points will naturally resolve themselves. For example, 'There is no measure for measuring objects' is a counter-example that contradicts a commitment, but it is not a counter-example that contradicts scripture, because it is sufficient to commit in this way. Therefore, Tsongkhapa's commentary states: 'This (example) is a case of combining faith and scripture into one, representing them in common, not showing these two on some examples.' This statement is unreasonable, because being able to represent these two with one example means that these two are definitively established on one example. Because here it says: 'Therefore, for this example, the similarities are also shown.' So, if someone asks: 'What is an example of contradiction with scripture like?' For a clear example of non-contradiction with scripture, there is recognition, such as, through the practice of giving, etc., in the future, the happiness of the fruit will not be achieved, because that commitment's meaning is harmed by scriptures validated by three types of examination. 2-320 It is explained thus: 'For the future, the happiness of Dharma will not be achieved.' Fourth, explaining harm and obstruction separately. The fourth part, explaining harm (གནོད་, Nodha) and obstruction (གེགས་, Gegs) separately: the way of becoming an obstruction, and clearly explaining its proof. First, for the argument that one's own self is impermanent, it is not necessarily dependent on objects like sound. For example, a non-Buddhist practitioner, if they previously accepted the treatises on permanence as valid, and later committed to 'you are impermanent,' which contradicts that treatise, then a discerning person would not consider the previously accepted treatise on the permanence of sound, and the later commitment to the impermanence of sound without certainty, as mutually harmful, because these two merely become obstructions to each other. Because these two are only equally capable of contradicting each other's commitments without a valid basis. There is also an example of these two being mutually obstructive, for example, the two parts of the statement 'My own mother is a prostitute' are mutually obstructive, and share the same characteristic. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because, when a debater previously accepts the treatises of the eternalists as valid, and later asserts that 'sound is impermanent,' if it is related to the reliable valid cognition, or when analyzing with the power of reality, it becomes self-contradictory in nature, and therefore merely obstructs each other. To this it is explained: 'For things that are not a basis, even if one speaks contrary to the treatises, there will be no harm, because the abilities of the two are the same, so they will obstruct each other, just like one's own words, which are also one's own words at that time.' The second case is: if later, after determining that sound is impermanent with valid cognition, one asserts that 'sound is impermanent,' does this assertion harm the meaning associated with the self-contradictory assertion? This also requires distinguishing the situation: when analyzing the three extremely obscure places, among those assertions, whichever assertion has a reliable valid cognition, that assertion will become harmful to the meaning held by the other self-contradictory assertion, because that is the time when the scriptures are accepted as the valid means of proof. This is pervasive, but if it is not analyzing such extremely obscure places, then one's own held meaning contradicts the reasoning of reality, that is, the assertion that cannot be established by the power of reality, or although it can be established by the power of reality later, the current assertion contradicts, and the assertion with the same ability, how can it harm the object of the inference of reality with the meaning of truth? Because it cannot harm. Similarly, how can the true assertion harm the meaning held by the two kinds of assertions and the assertion with the same ability? Because it cannot harm, because in the realm of reality, words are not valid cognition.' To this it is explained: 'Among these assertions, whichever has valid cognition, that will become harmful to others. If it is not like that, the assertion that contradicts reason, the assertion with the same ability, how can it harm the inference of the assertion with the meaning of truth?' Here, most commentators, regarding 'after determining that sound is impermanent with valid cognition, the assertion that sound is impermanent will harm the meaning held by the assertion that sound is eternal,' explain the meaning of the sentences 'among these assertions, whichever has valid cognition,' etc., which contradicts the *Pramāṇavārttika* itself, because it is a universal affirmation. And so on, and 'inference in its own field of activity does not need to rely on scriptures,' etc., and 'when transforming in the three places, accepting treatises is reasonable,' etc., because when analyzing the first two objects to be measured, scriptures will not become a part of the support for benefit and harm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
