Collected Teachings of Rutuk Gyamtso LG19, 'Unveiled Explanation'. Unveiled Explanation The connection arising from one's own previous writings. From 'Rays of the Sun of Eloquence', the treatise called 'Unveiled Explanation: A Stream of Ganges Water Dispelling Fame'. May there be auspiciousness! Pure intention, white as a lotus, immeasurable palace of loving-kindness appears; Vast commentaries and treatises increase wisdom, dispelling ignorance, a thousand rays of white light spread; My venerable and victorious teacher, upholds the doctrine and expands the teachings. Here, I will explain the writings of the logician Dignāga, along with the excellent explanations of Mañjuśrīmitra, in the assembly of the wise, for the delight of the learned. 'Truthful, definite, possessing,' etc., there are three sections. The first is the connection arising from one's own previous writings. The objects of explanation are the connection of the Pramāṇasūtra (量论), the connection of the sections of the text, the connection of the words, and the connection of the explainer with the Pramāṇavārttika (量理宝藏论), there are five in total. The first is: If one wonders from where the treatise 'Truthful,' etc., arises? This is the promise and result of that; this treatise arises from here. The reason it arises from there is that, in the section 'This is the promise and result of that,' the truthful sign that relies on trustworthy words is summarized as the truthful result sign. So, what is a trustworthy word? The nature of a trustworthy word, the distinction between a trustworthy word and scripture, and the reasons for comprehensively summarizing the two into one direction, etc., will be explained in detail. Therefore, the treatise 'Truthful, definite' etc., arose. 'This is the promise and result of that,' this treatise arises from 'By the divisions of inference, that harm is explained in four ways.' The reason for this is that, in the previous treatise, if the eliminating valid cognition is explained in four ways, then, is there a sign that serves as the basis for the eliminating trustworthy inference? If there is, then the number of truthful signs would not be fixed at three. That is not the case, because the truthful sign that serves as the basis for trustworthy inference is included in the truthful result sign. Therefore, in the explanation, the treatise 'This is the promise and result of that' arose. 'By the divisions of inference,' this treatise arises from 'The promise is also valid cognition, considered to be unimpeded.' The reason it arises from here is that, in the previous treatise, for the truthful object to be proven for the sake of others, the opponent in that context considered that valid cognition was unimpeded. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone said, 'There needs to be something without obstruction.' Then, in order to accomplish the benefit of others, how many valid cognitions do you think are the adversaries to that?' By dividing the eliminative inference into three parts, 'It is said in the Sutra of Valid Cognition that there are four eliminative valid cognitions.' Because 'through the divisions of inference' etc. occurred. 'That which is promised is also' etc., that is, the opponent grasped what was promised.' This continues from before. There is a reason for the continuation, because from the occasion of 'nature phrase' etc., just by the four aspects of the definition, can one completely possess the characteristics of the correct benefit of others? 'It is not that one completely possesses the characteristics just by that, because even that which is promised by the opponent himself, the fifth aspect, which is without the obstruction of valid cognition (perception and inference), must be complete.' Therefore, 'that which is promised is also' etc. occurred. The verses from 'nature phrase' to 'the opponent grasped what was promised' also continue from 'the statement of proof has meaning of understanding', 'although it is so, because there is no delusion, it is a characteristic'. There is a reason for the continuation, because in the previous discussion, in order to avert delusion about the terminology of the correct aspect of the benefit of others, after explaining the characteristics of the correct statement of proof, someone said, 'I will explain the categories of the correct benefit of others.' Then, how do you think the explanation will be done? It will be explained by explaining the characteristics of the correct benefit of others, which possesses five aspects.' Therefore, 'nature phrase' etc. occurred. The discussion of 'statement of proof' etc. continues from 'that which has the prior pervasion, even without it'. The reason for continuing from that is that, in the previous discussion, even if 'sound is impermanent' was not actually stated, as a part of the correct statement of proof of 'if it is produced, it is impermanent' etc., but relying on stating that statement of proof, due to the circumstances, in the mindstream of the object of statement, that is, the external opponent, an inference of understanding the established 'sound is impermanent' will arise. Then, after explaining the inference for others, is it not necessary to explain the correct established for others? 'Because relying on stating the correct statement of proof for others, one is able to understand the correct established for others.' There is no fault, because the established that can be understood by relying on stating the statement of proof is that sound is impermanent. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
