Past actions, as fruits, do not exist at all; the present fruit, which is the present, has only two kinds: the self-fruit and the puruṣakāra-fruit (fruit of effort); for the future, the present fruit has only the visamyoga-phala (fruit of separation), and no other four fruits, as stated in the scriptures. Because it is said in the scriptures: 'All pasts have four, the middle is the future, the middle two are unborn, the future has three fruits.' Therefore, according to its wording, the fruit of the present dharma, for the present, has only two kinds: the self-fruit and the puruṣakāra-fruit, and does not have the equal-flowing fruit and the vipāka-fruit (fruit of maturation). Because the self-fruit and the puruṣakāra-fruit both have simultaneity of cause and effect; while the equal-flowing fruit and the vipāka-fruit do not have simultaneity of cause and effect. The key point is that the past has before and after, while the present and future do not have before and after. Thus, if we understand according to the literal meaning of the scriptures, the past fruit has three kinds: past, present, and future; the present fruit has two kinds: present and future; the present fruit does not have the past; the future fruit has only the future; the future fruit does not have the past and present; although the present fruit has the present, the present fruit has only the self-fruit and the puruṣakāra-fruit, and nothing else; although the future fruit has the future, the future fruit has only the self-fruit, the puruṣakāra-fruit, and the vipāka-fruit, and nothing else. If one can understand it literally like this, then the present does not have an equal cause; before a present conditioned phenomenon, there is no future conditioned phenomenon that has already arisen; before a past conditioned phenomenon, there are no two conditioned phenomena, present and future, that have already arisen; past conditioned phenomena have before and after, so one acknowledges that a past conditioned phenomenon arises between the before and after of a past phenomenon; If one acknowledges this, then the key is that the past has before and after, so all pasts are not simultaneous; the present and future do not have before and after, so all presents are simultaneous, and all futures are simultaneous, which must be acknowledged at the beginning of establishing tenets. If wise people analyze and research, perhaps they can eliminate these problems, but if analyzed with reason, it seems that difficult logical problems will arise, as mentioned slightly above. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In summary, regarding the commitment made earlier to explain where the basis for 'homogeneous cause' would be elucidated, it is now clearly explained here. In the case of 'same and different,' for example, the Path of Seeing (Darśanamārga) acts as a homogeneous cause for its own Path of Seeing, producing a homogeneous result of the Path of Seeing. It also acts as a homogeneous cause for the two that are different from itself: the Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation (Asaikṣamārga) and the Path of No More Learning (Aśaikṣamārga). The Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation acts as a homogeneous cause for both itself and the Path of No More Learning. The Path of No More Learning acts as a homogeneous cause only for itself. We do not accept the literal meaning of this statement, but rather grasp its essence. That is to say, the Path of Seeing of a dull-witted (mṛdvindriya) Follower of Faith (śraddhānusārin) among the Hearers (Śrāvaka), the present Path of Seeing in their continuum, is the homogeneous cause for the future Path of Seeing in their continuum. The past Path of Seeing in that continuum is the homogeneous cause for both the present and future Paths of Seeing in that continuum. Similarly, the present Path of Seeing is the homogeneous cause for both the future Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation and the future Path of No More Learning. The past Path of Seeing is the homogeneous cause for both the present and future Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation, and the present and future Path of No More Learning. Similarly, the future Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation and the future Path of No More Learning are homogeneous causes for each other. The past Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation is the homogeneous cause for both the present and future Path of No More Learning. Similarly, the present Path of No More Learning is the homogeneous cause for a future Path of No More Learning, but there is no present Path of No More Learning that acts as a homogeneous cause for a present Path of No More Learning, because there is no such Path of No More Learning in the past, present, or future. Then, if someone asks, 'What is the basis for saying that the past acts as a homogeneous cause for the past?' It can be answered that, for example, the past Path of Seeing is the homogeneous cause for the past Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation. If someone asks, the past Path of Seeing is considered to have occurred before the past Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation, then is the past Uncontaminated Path of Cultivation subsequent to or prior to the present Path of Seeing? If it is the former, then it must be admitted that the past Path of Cultivation is the self-result of the present Path of Seeing, which would mean admitting that the present result is past, which would create a problem. How should this be answered? Furthermore, if there is no before or after in the present, then the Path of Seeing of the... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
