Although understanding all is empty, still be careful of karmic consequences. Although realizing self and other are inseparable, still generate compassion. Although there are many doctrines, still follow the footsteps of Dagpo. Four precious ways to maintain initial practice: Although doubts arise, it is precious to maintain practice without abandoning it. Without choosing places to move, it is precious to maintain practice directly. Without diminishing the variety of experiences, it is precious to maintain practice. When circumstances are favorable, it is precious to maintain practice diligently. Four difficult-to-distinguish acceptances and rejections are: Although profound, eliminate the understanding that dwells in the realm of the mind. Although good, separate from the experiences that can be tasted. Seek the realization where mental speculation ceases on its own. Do not overestimate yourself, cut off corrections from others. Maintaining practice with four "is"s: If you become too attached, you will bind yourself. If you let it go wherever it goes, there is nowhere to go. If you loosen it gently, it will appear clearly. Except for remembering, completely abandon it. Four ways of abiding that surpass hundreds of thousands of jewels: Abide without touching with the mind where it arises. Do not bind with ropes, abide in the state of mere remembrance. Be content with whatever arises, abide in ordinariness and ease. In the space of self-illumination, abide freely in self-liberation. Four ways of letting go are the essence of Dharma: Let go of appearances without affirmation or negation, let go naturally. Let go of whatever arises without alteration, let go openly. Let go of pleasure and pain without acceptance or rejection, let go sharply. Let go of good and bad without discrimination, let go calmly. Four essential points of certainty to gather together are: Gather practice into devotion and compassion. Gather view and meditation into mere remembrance. Gather conduct into the nature of Dharma. Gather all Dharmas into taming your own mind. Although not a spontaneous Dohā song arising from meditation, Seeing the profound Sutras and Tantras, and also inwardly, After examining a little, whatever arises in experience, I sing a small song condensing four lines into thirty. Since I do not possess these qualities, I have no hope of benefiting the minds of others, But thinking to refresh my own memory until death, I think there is no fault of a worldly Lama. Therefore, I speak these words, with connection to this, May I never be deceived by obstacles and wrong paths, May the all-pervading Lord Padma Nyingje Wangpo and, My mind and heart become one, may I attain the single taste of Bodhi! This "Parrot Lotus" of spontaneous expression, as remembered, was written at the age of twenty-four while residing in the Palpung retreat cave. May all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, along with their retinues, and Avalokiteśvara, the noble Tara, be mindful! When remembering death, practice this; may your compassion hold me, lest I waste this precious human life. This dream-like life, whether happy or sad, Without longing for pleasure or aversion to suffering, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. This life, like a butter lamp in the wind, whether short or long, Without adding to the firm grip of self-clinging, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. This deceptive, illusory intellect, whether it works or not, Treating the eight worldly concerns like grass, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. This monastic community, like birds on a tree, whether gathered or dispersed, With the rope of attachment tied around one's own head, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. This illusory body, like a hundred-year-old dilapidated house, whether it lives or falls, Without being bound by efforts for food, clothing, and medicine, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. This Dharma practice, like a child's game, whether attained or lost, Without being distracted by many trivialities, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. These gods and demons, like reflections in a mirror, whether beneficial or harmful, Without seeing one's own deluded appearances as enemies, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. These false words, like echoes from a traceless rock, whether pleasant or unpleasant, With the Three Jewels and one's own mind as witnesses, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. Like a deer's horn, useless when needed, whether known or unknown, Without placing reliance solely on cultural knowledge, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. These possessions, like the potent poison hala, whether present or absent, Without spending life in the sin of wrong livelihood, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. This guru image, like dog feces wrapped in silk, whether obtained or not, If one can sense the rot of one's own head with the nose, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma. These family relationships, like guests at a marketplace, whether friendly or hostile, By cutting the heavy rope of attachment from the heart, may I diligently practice the sacred Dharma.
