It is said that going and so on will also occur. Thus, by striving in the preliminary practices of speech, one can temporarily avert the manifestation of speech, pacify obstacles, and purify the obscurations of speech. The ultimate need is that speech does not fall into samsara and is liberated in the Sambhogakaya. One will attain the Vajra speech of all Buddhas. Third, the preliminary practices of mind have three aspects: first, examining the place of arising; second, the place of abiding in between; and third, examining the place of going in the end. First, from the Prasangika it says: "The mind is the first place of arising, the place of abiding in between, and the place of going in the end. By examining and analyzing these three in this way, the mind is tamed and the nature of the mind is known." Thus, the first is to examine the place of arising and the one who arises. In front, meditate on the Lama as before. With the essential points of the body, the seven-fold posture of Vairochana, and so on, make supplications. Dissolve the Lama into oneself and mix them without separation from the mind. Remain in the natural state of non-conceptualization for as long as it lasts. Then, turn inward and examine which of your body, speech, and mind is most important. Which of these three—body, speech, and mind—is the one who abandons samsara and attains nirvana? Through examination and analysis, when it is determined that the mind is the main thing, this mind of yours, which does not arise but arises in nine different ways and scatters in various ways, from what did it first arise—the external phenomena, the internal illusory body, the appearance of emptiness, the conditions of the father and mother, and so on? Did mind arise from mind? From what kind of thing did it arise? Look outward, look inward, look upward, look downward. Thus, by examining, one knows that there is no place of arising and no one who arises. Although it seems to arise, it is not established from the time of arising. That is the way of abiding of the Dharmakaya, the primordial nature of beginningless birth. Therefore, there is a need to recognize one's own face. Second, examining the place of abiding in between: when one thinks that the mind arose from such a place, or when thoughts suddenly arise, does that mind that arose in that way abide in external appearances or in the internal aggregates? The awareness of the one who abides, is it material or non-material, what is the shape, color, and so on? By examining, it is not established in any way. The realization of clarity and emptiness like the sky arises, which is the recognition that there is no abiding in between. This is the need to accomplish the ultimate Sambhogakaya. Third, examining the place of going in the end: when one thinks that thoughts arise like a fox and disappear like smoke, where do they go? What is the place of going and the one who goes like? When one thinks that thoughts disappear and are gone, where do they disappear to?

When looking, it seems to be moving but goes nowhere. It seems to stop but doesn't stop. Knowing this is awareness, emptiness without a trace, which is recognizing one's own nature. Ultimately, it is necessary to meet the Nirmanakaya (emanation body) as the fruit. Furthermore, is this mind a thing or not a thing? If you think it is a thing, what measures its shape, color, size, function, essence? Look inward at the consciousness that thinks. Look outward at the consciousness that is being looked at. Are these two the same or different? In this way, pursue awareness alone, looking without distraction for even a moment. Like a child chasing its mother or an arrow chasing its target, examine and search. Then, like an old man basking in the sun or a person who has finished their work, relax and let go. Furthermore, if thoughts arise suddenly, don't let them escape like a bird. Hold them tightly with mindfulness and look at where that thought arises from. If you think it arises from the mind, then look at where that mind comes from. Does it come from existence? Where is its source? Does it come from non-existence? Where is its target? Look without distraction for even a moment, and relax into a state of seeing nothing at all. Furthermore, if thoughts arise wildly, look as before until you have exhausted the source of the mind. Examine and investigate in this way, establish recognition in a state of finding nothing, and repeat it until there is no further investigation possible. By striving in this way, you can temporarily reverse the mind's clinging, pacify obstacles, and purify sins. The ultimate and supreme necessity is that the mind does not fall into samsara, but is liberated into the sole Dharmakaya (truth body), and that the minds of all Buddhas become inseparable from the Vajra (diamond). As it is also said in the tantras: "By placing this in an unthinkable state, all thoughts are led to the place of exhaustion." This also has the same meaning. If you wish to elaborate on this here, then like the instructions on Trekchö (cutting through solidity) and Tögal (direct crossing), as a preliminary, the instruction on demolishing the house of the mind, examining the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing, the essence of mind itself, which is inexpressible, is seen. Examining one and many, the nature of mind is understood. Examining naked self-seeing, the wisdom that transcends mind is recognized. If these can be extensively accomplished, it is extremely excellent. Second, settling the mind in its natural state: In the space in front of you, in the center of a clear blue sphere of empty form, visualize the kind root guru, his body unmoving, eyes
