This is calm abiding that relies on (things). Second, the method of holding the mind by focusing on thoughts is: elaborating on various thoughts. The five poisons, the three poisons, the thoughts of afflictions, subject-object duality, and samsara. The ten virtuous actions and the thoughts of the ten perfections, etc. When one stares intently at the nature of any thought, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, that arises, without thought, one attains calm abiding in non-grasping. Awareness is clear and empty, without an object to grasp, and it appears clearly. Without distraction, maintain the state of self-knowing and self-liberation. Again, focus intently on the nature of any thought that arises, and without acceptance or rejection, recognize its nature. One should practice the key instructions of transforming thoughts into the path. Third, the ultimate calm abiding is to hold the mind in non-thought. In a secluded place, in a dark room, sit on a soft cushion, with the body in the seven postures of Vairochana. Stare blankly at the empty space, and in the mind, cut off the three thoughts of past, future, and present, and the three thoughts of virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, etc., completely severing the flow of thoughts of the three times. Without thinking anything in the mind, like a clear sky, settle the mind in a clear, empty, ungrasping, and relaxed state, and a calm abiding of bliss, clarity, and non-thought will arise. The second part has three aspects: First, the higher seeing of the cause. Observing and meditating on the mind is like this: Where does this mind of mine come from, where does it reside, and where will it go? Thus, observe and analyze the nature of the three states of arising, dwelling, and ceasing. Do the five elements arise, dwell, or perish in one's own body? Thus, observe and analyze. Furthermore, does the mind have colors such as white, red, blue, yellow, green, and mixed colors? Thus, observe and analyze. Furthermore, is the mind the shape of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, or is it a shape such as round, square, triangular, long, or oval? Thus, observe and analyze. Is thought something different from the mind? Or is thought the mind? Thus, observe and analyze. Furthermore, does the appearance of external objects arise from the mind, or does the mind arise from appearances? Thus, observe and analyze. Observe and analyze the mind (that is being observed) with the mind (that is observing). Is this mind itself existent? Or

Or is it not nonexistent? Is it clear or unclear? Is it happiness or suffering? Is it with self or without self? Is it permanent or impermanent? Is it peaceful or unpeaceful? Thus, one should examine. Is it appearing or not appearing? Thus, one should examine and analyze. Furthermore, what is the mind in meditative equipoise like? What is the mind not in meditative equipoise like? One should thoroughly examine and analyze one's own mind. One should also thoroughly examine and analyze the nature of the mind that desires to be in meditative equipoise. At that time, the nature of the mind is free from the three characteristics of arising, ceasing, and abiding. Its essence is emptiness by nature, like the sky, while the expanse is luminous by nature. That very awareness, the unimpeded play, whatever arises and appears, all these appearances are equal in taste, without arising, without ceasing, and without abiding. Its essence is emptiness, its nature is luminosity, and its aspects are the unimpeded awareness that arises and appears in many ways. In the indivisible, beyond-mind, sky-like state, the three aspects of clarity, awareness, and emptiness abide without beginning or end, like the sky. If it is so, then that is the very reality. The three aspects of ground, path, and result; the four aspects of view, meditation, action, and result; the four noble truths; the four joys; the four immeasurables; the six perfections; the ten grounds and five paths; the two, method and wisdom; the two truths; refuge; confession; protection; bodhicitta; the two accumulations; compassion; the generation stage; śamatha and vipaśyanā; the three jewels; the three kāyas; the five wisdoms, and so forth—one should be skilled in introducing all these qualities on the basis of recognizing one's own nature. Second, the higher seeing of the essence. After introducing the ordinary consciousness as one's own nature, the way to practice it all at once is as follows: The very nature of the mind is free from the extremes of arising, ceasing, and abiding; liberated from the duality of grasping and being grasped, which is the clinging to self and what belongs to self; its essence is emptiness; its nature is luminosity; and its aspects are the unimpeded awareness that clearly shines and appears without an object. It transcends the object of grasping, the seen and the seer; it goes beyond the object of focus, the meditated upon and the meditator; it is free from mental fabrication because one does not mentally fabricate anything; it is relaxed because one does not artificially manipulate it; it is without action because it is free from all activities; it is without grasping because one does not identify with whatever arises; it is naturally present because the consciousness in meditative equipoise is free from artificiality; it is empty and clear because there is no conceptual clinging; it is luminous by its very nature, so...
