Having experienced the suffering of samsara in this way, one should now think of being without attachment or clinging. Then, the actual practice of separating body and mind is as follows: On the soles of one's feet, visualize the essence of mind, appearing but without inherent existence, like a moon in water. Press the abdomen against the back, and forcefully curl the body and mind together. Draw the lower wind upwards. As that moon in water rises, appearing white nara ra, it rises from within the major veins of the thighs, appearing white nara ra. At the navel, within the torso, the two unite as one. Focus intently on the white, shimmering point. Then, again, appearing white nara ra, it rises from the heart. Rising from the throat, visualize it emerging from the Brahma aperture at the crown of the head. Visualize the Brahma aperture as being about the size of the eye of a medium-sized spinning wheel, bright and clear white. Verbally utter "ཕཊ་" (Tibetan, Devanagari: फट, Romanized Sanskrit: phaṭ, Literal Chinese meaning: Snap!) forcefully. That moon in water is then released into the sky at the speed of white nara ra. Do not think that it will not go. Without distraction, focus on the white, shimmering point. Afterwards, the introduction to recognition is as follows: Then, as the expanse grows larger and larger, the sky pervades wherever awareness pervades. Think that wherever awareness pervades, the sky pervades. Without the thought of meditating or not meditating, naturally relax and let go. Thus, it is said: This is the same as the realm of space, inseparable and beyond analysis. By meditating in this way, three kinds of experiences will arise: For those of superior faculties, the experience of freedom from elaboration will arise. For those of intermediate faculties, the experience of direct transcendence will arise. For those of inferior faculties, the experience of forceful energy will arise. Considering these, Machig Labdrön said: "Tightly contract and loosely release. The key to meditation is there." Second, the introduction to continuous meditation: Adopt a comfortable posture. The object of focus is the essence of the union of wind and mind, appearing but without inherent existence, like a moon in water, meditate on it slightly below the navel, and understand it as before. Third, without the thought of meditation and without any mental fabrication: Sit in the vajra posture. Make the gesture of meditative equipoise with the hands. Straighten the spine. Bend the neck slightly. Fix the eyes on the tip of the nose. Do not cut off the past. Do not welcome the future. Do not mentally fabricate anything about the present awareness.
