Grasp. Where does that (thought) itself come from, where does it go? Where does it abide? When observed, it cannot be found, it is emptiness. For example, when a reed is cut and examined, it is understood that all reeds are empty inside. Similarly, when one thought is recognized as emptiness, all thoughts are the same as that. There is no joy in abiding, and no displeasure in moving, just as there is no difference between water and water waves. There is no difference between abiding and moving, observe the nature of whatever arises. If it is wild and turbulent, relax the body and mind; if it is dull and unclear, look with focus. Then, at some point, the movement decreases. Sometimes it abides slightly and gently, sometimes it scatters. Even if it scatters, it quickly returns to the state of abiding. Therefore, abiding is named attachment. Then, when cultivating that practice, it becomes relaxed, clear, and bright. Just as ocean waves do not cause harm, even if a slight movement arises, it does not cause harm. Such situations sometimes occur and sometimes do not. Sometimes even with meditation and contemplation with bodily postures, it is difficult; sometimes it appears that way even without meditation. Then, the body is comfortable and the mind abides happily. Ordinary activities like walking, sitting, and so on do not harm it. From then on, the desire to meditate is found. Sometimes it even occurs in dreams. Thinking, "My experience and realization are good," therefore, a strong attachment arises to it. Do not be attached to it, observe its nature. Appearance is bliss, and nature is emptiness, the two are inseparable, the great seal of bliss and emptiness will arise. If attached, it becomes the cause of being born as a desire realm god. Some people regard thoughts as enemies, thinking that not thinking anything is meditation. That is called the view of the Chinese monk Heshang. Not thinking anything, remaining blankly, is similar to obstruction, it is the cause of being born as an animal. Even if there is merit in remembering, remembering is not allowed, gathering consciousness in the heart and abiding, that is called obstruction, it is the path of the Shravakas. Therefore, do not deliberately stop the movement, nor deliberately encourage it, observe the nature of whatever arises. When observing, if nothing is seen, then that is seeing the ultimate truth of emptiness. Just as in the state of not seeing, there is nothing to see. Sometimes even when observing, it is not clear, it is blurry. The movement is vague, turbulent, and the heart is unhappy. This way of meditation also seems to have no support. Doubts arise in the mind, some thoughts arise. That itself is a rough experience, so there is no harm. Body

The Method of Observing with a Relaxed Mind Focus on the sky. Look at the azure sky, blending it with your own mind. The clarity and brightness of the mind emerge, revealing luminosity and emptiness. Sometimes the three, clarity, awareness, and emptiness, appear nakedly. Thinking this is a high realization, arrogance arises. A firm conviction arises that no one can change your mind. At that time, if that conviction is dominated by arrogance, it becomes the cause of being reborn in the realm of the gods in the form realm. Observing the essence of clarity is emptiness itself. The union of clarity and emptiness appears as the Great Seal. Sometimes the body and mind are all emptiness. Seeing everything as emptiness, one speaks lofty Dharma talks. Just as the empty sky cannot be stained by anything, one thinks that good and evil, benefit and harm, are meaningless. If one's behavior is rough and one does not practice virtue, then a foolish view of emptiness becomes the cause of going to the lower realms. That is called a wrong view of emptiness. Even if one sees everything as empty in that way, one should still protect one's nature and strive to adopt and abandon cause and effect. Those stages of experience, whether they last long or disappear quickly, etc., do not remain in one state, just like the changing sky. After that, even if conceptual thoughts have not decreased, or even if there are many conceptual thoughts, it does not hinder meditation; meditation appears like rain falling into the ocean. After that, there is no need to alternate between the generation stage and the completion stage; without separating the essence of practice from emptiness, contemplate your own body as the form of the deity Great Compassionate Avalokiteśvara, like a rainbow appearing in the sky. Recite the six-syllable mantra 吽!), gaining just enough from the previous effort. Without interrupting the three, the practice will be joyful. Even during meditation, there is no difficulty. Just by remembering, one arrives at the state of practice. That is called easy to cultivate. After that, seeing the earth, stones, mountains, rocks, etc., everything is like a mist, each clear, but seeing the essence as emptiness. Mind and sky merge together without separation, thinking that the mind pervades as far as the sky pervades. Everything is mind, and mind has no essence. One thinks that it is emptiness, devoid of anything. It is not existence, there is not a particle of matter. It is not non-existence, yet all kinds of things appear. One thinks that it is neither existence nor non-existence, but one. If one clings tightly to these, one will stray into the four formless realms. Without having a fixed conviction of clinging to anything, let it appear naturally without clinging, and look openly at the essence. After that, the object of observation and the observer merge into one. Observing this way, observing that way.
