Meditation: Generate compassion for all sentient beings. Do not cling to attachment and hatred, to all of samsara and nirvana, but cultivate equanimity. The method of purification is to realize that the six consciousnesses and the six sense faculties do not exist independently of one's own mind. First, understand that the apprehended and the apprehender are unreal, then experience it, and finally realize it. It is very important to examine the immediately preceding mind when all consciousnesses arise and cease. Whichever of the six consciousnesses arises, it arises dependent on the immediately preceding action of the mind; and when it ceases, all virtuous, non-virtuous, and unwavering actions are carried away by it and merged into the alaya consciousness, so one must recognize this flaw. Correspondingly, the afflicted mind also arises, giving rise to the thought of "I" in the mind, clinging to the self, generating pride, obscuring oneself, which is ignorance. For this reason, when the six consciousnesses arise, one cannot clearly recognize the object and the subject, but instead grasps the apprehended and the apprehender of self and mine as real, thereby generating all afflictions. Therefore, the afflictions of the six consciousnesses arise based on looking outward, which are to be abandoned by seeing, while the afflictions of looking inward are said to be abandoned by meditation. Even those who have entered the Hearer Vehicle attain peace by abandoning the afflictions of the self-view of a person that are to be abandoned by seeing and meditation. However, because they do not understand the immediately preceding mind and the antidote—the doctrine of the selflessness of phenomena—they are far from the great enlightenment of the Buddha. Therefore, those who are wise and have attained meditative concentration should meditate in this way: When placing the mind in non-conceptual meditation, the six consciousnesses dissolve into the dharmadhatu; and when rising from that samadhi, one sees subtle thoughts, that is, the action of the mind is shaking. If at that time one is not grasped by the view taught by the authentic guru, these erroneous thoughts will arise: the mind is not truly existent, there is no place of arising, and there is no true cessation, so all thoughts are causeless nihilism; or, even if one prevents the self-nature of thoughts, still
