The clear light of attainment is the clear light of the result. In particular, regarding the clear light of sleep, the arising of virtuous activity during sleep is the common clear light, and if one attains the four emptinesses in sequence, it is the uncommon clear light. Among these, if one falls into deep sleep without awareness, it is the thick clear light; if one awakens from unawareness and is accompanied by the appearance of subtle and coarse objects, it is called the subtle clear light. If one realizes the emptiness of unborn mind in both of these, it is the clear light of realization; if it is accompanied by experience and certainty, it is considered the clear light of experience. Furthermore, some say that when sleep appears as a state of mere quiescence, neither awake nor dreaming, but with the clear appearance of various objects, the former is labeled the thick clear light and the latter is explained as the subtle clear light. Then, the method of cultivating experience over time is: having ascertained the four emptinesses in sequence, if one is able to hold the thick clear light of sleep, then in the waking state, meditate on the illusory deity body, generate the four emptinesses of the winds dissolving into the central channel, and then perform the yoga of gradually dissolving into the clear light, remaining single-pointedly in equipoise for as long as possible in the fourth emptiness. When beginning to rise from that state, train in rising as an illusory body in an instant. Similarly, during sleep, when the emptinesses of sleep appear in sequence, gradually dissolve them through the yoga of dissolving the illusory deity body, cultivate the clear light of sleep single-pointedly as much as possible, and when beginning to manifest dreams, practice rising as an illusory body in an instant, and so on. If one is unable to do so, then in the waking state, dissolve the illusory deity body through the yoga of dissolution accompanied by wind practice, cultivate the non-conceptual clear light as much as possible, and train in rising from that state as an illusory deity body, and so on. During sleep, when one is certain of the appearance, increase, and attainment, whichever arises, practice the yoga of dissolution, and from sleep, whether one attains the thick or subtle clear light, cultivate it single-pointedly as much as possible, and when beginning to manifest dreams, rise as an illusory body in an instant, and practice visualizing the outer and inner world as a palace and the retinue deities, and so on, and practice purifying the fields, and so on. The main purpose of this instruction is to manifest the ultimate clear light, that is, in the waking state, the winds dissolve into the central
