Written at Sakya Monastery. The Advice on Separating from the Four Attachments by Sakya Pandita. Homage to the feet of the venerable Lama! In general, having obtained a body of leisure and endowment, encountering the precious teachings of the Buddha, and generating unbiased intelligence, one must practice the Dharma without distortion. For that, one needs to practice separating from the four attachments. What are the four attachments? They are: not being attached to this life, not being attached to the three realms of samsara, not being attached to self-interest, and not being attached to things and characteristics. Explaining them: This life is like a bubble of water, and since there is no certainty when one will die, it is not permissible to be overly attached. These three realms of samsara are like a poisonous fruit; although immediately sweet, they ultimately bring harm. Those who are attached to them are mistaken. Being attached to one's own benefit is like raising the son of an enemy; although it may seem pleasant in the short term, it will certainly bring harm to oneself in the long run. Therefore, even if being attached to one's own benefit is comfortable in the short term, in the long run, one will go to the lower realms. Being manifestly attached to things and characteristics is like mistaking a mirage for water; although it appears as water in the short term, it cannot be drunk. This samsara appears to those whose minds are confused, but if examined with wisdom, there is nothing with an inherently established nature. Therefore, one should not dwell on the past, nor anticipate the future, nor fixate consciousness on the present. Having understood this, one should realize that all phenomena are free from elaboration. By doing so, not being attached to this life, one will not be born in the lower realms; not being attached to the three realms of samsara, one will not be born in samsara; not being attached to self-interest, one will not be born as a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha; not being attached to things and characteristics, one will quickly attain perfect enlightenment. The Advice on Separating from the Four Attachments is undistorted, it is in accordance with the tradition of the great Sakyapas, and was composed by Sakya Pandita. Thus it is complete. Contained in the sixth volume of the Treasury of Instructions. The Separating from the Four Attachments by Nubpa Rigdzin Drak. The Separating from the Four Attachments by Nubpa Rigdzin Drak is present. Namo Guru! The venerable Sakya master said: Those who wish to seek the supreme bliss of Nirvana must separate from the four attachments. What are the four attachments? They are attachment to this life, attachment to the three realms of samsara, attachment to self-interest, and attachment to things and characteristics. There are also four antidotes to them: The antidote to the first attachment...

The antidotes: First, meditate on impermanence of death; second, remember the faults of samsara; third, remember the mind of enlightenment; fourth, remember that all phenomena are like dreams and illusions, without self-nature. By remembering and familiarizing in this way, four results will arise: Dharma becomes Dharma, Dharma becomes the path, and errors of the path are eliminated. The result of knowing and familiarizing in this way is: transforming erroneous appearances, the fully endowed Buddha of wisdom arises. Among these, the first is the antidote to attachment to this life, remembering the impermanence of death: think that there is no certainty when one will die, think that there are many causes of death, and think that death is of no help in any way. When such a thought arises, one will want to do a Dharma practice from the depths of one's heart, and at that time, Dharma becomes Dharma. Then, the antidote to attachment to the three realms of samsara is to remember the faults of samsara: Although there are such faults in attachment to this life, if one thinks that other universal monarchs, Brahma, Indra, etc., are all supreme happiness, that is not so. Because they have not transcended the nature of suffering. Even if their life and enjoyment last and increase for many eons, they will eventually die and perish, and there is even the danger of being born in the hell of uninterrupted suffering. Therefore, thinking that they have not transcended the nature of suffering, and familiarizing oneself with it, there will be a state where Dharma becomes the path. Because the three realms have not transcended the nature of suffering, the thought will arise that one must attain the bliss of nirvana, and one will accomplish all paths for that purpose. In this way, even if it arises in the mind, if one does not have the mind of enlightenment and only seeks one's own happiness, one will become an Arhat or a Pratyekabuddha. Therefore, to counteract attachment to one's own benefit, one must remember the mind of enlightenment: It is useless for oneself alone to be liberated from the suffering nature of the three realms, because there is not a single one of these sentient beings who has not been my father and mother. If they can attain the supreme bliss of nirvana, then even if I am born as a hell being from eon to eon, it is easy. As soon as one familiarizes oneself with and generates such a thought, the first error of the path, which is attachment to one's own benefit, is eliminated.
