When conceptual thoughts arise in the mind, immediately seize them with mindfulness, and instead of letting them flow towards their objects, keep them in their original state. Even if the mind wanders to external objects, seize it with mindfulness and do not allow it to indulge in distraction even slightly, but cultivate antidotes. As it is said, "Conceptual thought is great ignorance; it is the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara." Therefore, if conceptual thoughts are not seized by the mindfulness of recognition, then conceptual thought is the root of falling into samsara. It is not enough to merely recognize them; they must be liberated into the realm of the essence of selflessness. The second branch is not to let it rest loosely in its place. Wherever the mind rests, if it becomes dull and without clarity, it will become a flawed calm abiding, and the mind will become sluggish. Therefore, one can briefly place the mind on a genuine representation of the Tathagata or on an object contemplated by the mind, or on any object such as a pillar or a vase. Then, shift from that object to another and hold it. At all times, seize it with mindfulness. Likewise, do not let the mind rest loosely even for a moment, but shift the focus to various objects and do not let the mind be solely under the control of calm abiding, but tame the mind. The third is not to let it go too far up or down, that is, do not let the mind be controlled by either the wildness of conceptual thought or the state of merely abiding in calm abiding, but hold it with the rope of mindfulness. If you want to abide, you also have the power to abide; if you want to wander, you also have the power to wander, and without mixing the fault of distraction in either case, recognize it and liberate it into the rootless, and let it come as you wish, this is called taming the mind. Third, the first branch of placing the mind on Suchness itself is learning from examples, which has three stages: the time of delusion, the time of understanding delusion, and the time when delusion is absorbed into the rootless. These are to be learned by illustrating them with the twelve examples of illusion. First, when looking from afar, all the valleys are filled with mirages. As soon as one sees them, the deluded thought arises that the valleys are filled with water. The fear arises that this is an ocean of water and that one will be carried away and die. This is the time of delusion. Then, when one goes closer and examines carefully, one realizes that it is not an ocean of water but a mirage, and one turns away from the thought of fear. This is the time of understanding that delusion itself is delusion. Then, when one arrives nearby, the mirage

When tracing back to the source and finding no trace, when everything vanishes without a trace, it is the time to completely grasp the illusion. Similarly, connecting everything, such as fighting with enemies or associating with relatives and friends in dreams, clinging to these illusory and unreal appearances as real, is being in illusion. Through the power of meditation, the appearance of the dream does not cease, but one can recognize that it is only a dream, which is the time to understand the illusion. When waking up, the appearance of the dream disappears completely, and one understands its falsity, which is the time to completely grasp the illusion. Similarly, one should learn by sequentially applying the metaphors of illusion, water moon, Gandharva city, rainbow, cloud, lightning, waterfall, city of the moon-eater, etc., and rely on these examples of illusion to generate the special conviction of realizing that all dharmas are of the nature of illusion. Second, connecting to the meaning is divided into two: connecting to the appearance of thoughts and learning to focus. The first is: first, one must subdue the coarse afflictions that arise from oneself. For example, when strong anger arises, thinking "I will kill that enemy now," and experiencing unbearable pain accompanied by the intention to kill, this is being in illusion. After a while, the anger subsides, and one abides in peace, which is the time to understand the illusion. Recognizing that anger is a thought that arises suddenly in the mind, and therefore is unreal, is the time to completely grasp the illusion. If a yogi observes, anger arises from one's own mind, the mind takes ignorance as its cause, and arises from the condition of afflictions. These are not established in essence, therefore they are of the nature of illusion. If one observes illusion, it cannot be established anywhere, therefore it is without self-nature, which is the meaning of the Great Seal without letters. What is its meaning? The so-called "letter" is not an existent entity, but a verbal expression arising from the mind's conceptualization. Since the self-nature of conceptualization is not established, the self-nature of verbal expression is also not established. Therefore, there is no conceptualization and nothing to be said. This is called "non-conceptual, unspeakable." The meaning that is free from expression is called the Great Seal without letters. Saraha said: All beings who rely on letters, there is not one who does not rely on the non-letter. As long as there is no non-letter.
