So, what is the meaning of "Great"? Mudra, just as the commands of kings and others are sealed with a seal, this (Mahamudra) is to seal all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana; just as the signs such as Dharma robes symbolize their respective differences, this (Mahamudra) is to symbolize the reality of samsara and nirvana; just as the commands sealed with the king's seal cannot be violated by the subjects, all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana cannot violate this (Mahamudra), just as it is described in detail in the Sutra Requested by Akashagarbha. The so-called "Great" means that there is no dharma higher than this. As it is said in the Secret Accomplishment Dharma: "Fourth, the unsurpassed continuum, the one who manifests enlightenment, contemplates the Mahamudra, there is nothing else above it." Like this. In addition, the meaning of the name is also mentioned a lot in Mahamudra Tilaka and others. In the Difficult Explanation of Kalachakra, Garland of Lotuses, it says: "The so-called Mudra means that all the Tathagatas who appeared in the past, future, and present are born from the Prajnaparamita. Because of sealing happiness with the happiness of non-abiding nirvana or immutable bliss, it is called Mudra. It is different from Karma Mudra and Wisdom Mudra, and it can get rid of the habits of samsara, so it is 'Great'." This is how it is explained. The synonyms of the name are also: the Suchness of Ultimate Truth, the Supreme Wisdom, Samantabhadra, Mahamudra, Dharmakaya, etc. Indra Bodhi said in the Wisdom Accomplishment Dharma that these meanings are the same. Its essence is: not abiding anywhere, separated from all characteristics and original distinctions, pervading everything, the nature like the sky, these are the four classifications. If classified, there are three: the Mahamudra of cause, path, and result. First, the Mahamudra of cause or basis is: in general, the dharmata of all dharmas, from the beginning separated from all elaborations, the emptiness of self-luminous clarity, becoming the pervading lord of all samsara and nirvana. In particular, the nature of the self-mind that is clear, pure, and cannot be determined, the original reality, separated from speech, thought, and expression. As it is said in the Vajra Garland Tantra: "Mudra Tathagata wisdom, relies on the position of non-discrimination, the place of indivisible Vajrasattva, the bliss of non-discrimination.

La. Just as the sky has no covering. (This phrase) indicates (this principle). Regarding the Mahamudra of the path, in general, the Mahamudra of the base itself is familiarized through the Mahamudra of the path, removing obstacles in a way that sudden obstacles cannot be removed, thereby realizing the meaning that cannot be realized. As stated in the tantra: "Without self-nature and separate from the base, non-dual, selfless, and inexpressible, the self-awareness of yogis, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, all conceptual dharmas are completely abandoned." Etc., indicate (this principle). Specifically, in the Vajra Garland it says: "Dharma, karma, samaya, and the great mudra are spoken without error." And in the Essence of Wisdom Tantra it says: "The four mudras of dharma, samaya, wisdom, and karma are taught." As examples, from the teachings of the tantras and accomplished ones, there are many statements about the four and three mudras, as well as their different orders and internal distinctions. However, according to this pith instruction system, view, meditation, conduct, and experience are taught as the four great mudras. Among them, the view of Mahamudra, which is the first of the path to be cultivated, must be heard from the lama and understood by one's own mind. That is, to understand and comprehend the reality of the base mentioned above, which is the reality beyond expression, based on scriptural authority and reasoning. Furthermore, the Sutra of the Unmoving Nature of Reality states: "All dharmas are unborn by their own nature, do not abide by their own essence, are free from all limits of karma and action, and transcend the realm of thought and non-thought." Represented by this sentence, it should be known from the reality beyond expression repeatedly taught in all sutras and tantras. Second, the meditation of Mahamudra, in general, is to not be distracted from the state of view, but to abide in the state of view. As stated in the Commentary on the Awakening Mind: "The mind that is free from objects, abides in the nature of space, to meditate on space, is to meditate on emptiness." Etc., there are many statements. In particular, in this pith instruction, it is said to mix example and meaning. That is, using contaminated bliss as a means, generating uncontaminated wisdom, thereby taking the samadhi of uniting bliss and emptiness as the path. Or, symbolizing with the example that emptiness of space has no edge, center, direction, position, existence, non-existence, yes, no, or anything established, the meaning is to generate the emptiness of one's own mind.
