It is said to be the sound of "Kyihud." Teeth chatter. Splitting like a lotus. Splitting greatly like a lotus, there are eight types. These are all opposite the hot hells, and the differences in suffering are: First, without warm conditions such as houses, clothes, and sunlight, they dwell in the midst of great snow mountains. They are struck by cold winds and blizzards, which is very dangerous, and their bodies are filled with blisters, experiencing such suffering. Second, because of the extreme cold, the blisters also burst, and iron worms born from within tear the skin with their sharp mouths. Then they experience the suffering of blood and pus flowing out. Third, because of the cold, they cannot endure it and utter loud cries of "Achu," wailing in agony. Fourth, because of the cold, their bodies and minds seem to separate, pus flows from their eyes and noses, their throats are dry, and they utter groans of "Kyihud" in faint voices, experiencing such suffering. Fifth, because of the extreme cold, even their voices cannot come out, and they are in great danger, making "clattering" sounds as their teeth chatter, experiencing such suffering. Sixth, even more dangerous than that, because of the force of the wind, their bodies turn blue and split into five or six parts, experiencing such suffering. Seventh, even more severe winds blow, causing unbearable suffering, and the color of their skin turns red, almost losing all blood. They split into eight or ten pieces, experiencing such suffering. Eighth, even colder than that, their skin peels off, turns red, and splits into a hundred or a thousand or more cracks, from which flow fat, pus, marrow, and so on, experiencing such suffering. In the "Letter to a Friend," it says: The incomparable cold wind even penetrates the bones. The body trembles and curls up into a ball. Creatures born from the bursting of a hundred blisters. Controlled by swords, fat, pus, and marrow all flow out. Clattering teeth chatter, hair and fur all disappear. The eyes, ears, and throat are damaged, and everything rots. The space between body and mind becomes very dull. Dwelling in the cold hell, they cry out in extreme pain. That is how it is. The duration of their lives is: In the "Treasury of Knowledge," it says: In sesame oil for a hundred years. When one sesame seed is taken out, it is exhausted. That is the lifespan of the blister hell. The lifespan of the others is twenty times that. In the commentary, the Blessed One gave only an example of their lifespan.

Furthermore, O monks, for example, here, a sesame sack of eighty kharis from the country of Magadha, filled to the brim with sesame seeds. Then, if someone were to remove one sesame seed every hundred years, O monks, at that rate, that sesame sack of eighty kharis from the country of Magadha would be completely exhausted very quickly. But I would not say that one born in a bubble will be completely exhausted, quoting this sutra.

They experience suffering such as the pain of falling, and liberation from it. In the boundless river filled with burning ashes, the prison guards constantly torment them, causing them to suffer there for a long time. In short, since there is no way to be born in those places, strive not to be born. The method is to practice the path, and among all the paths, the supreme path is this teaching with its fruition, so think of practicing it single-mindedly. By meditating in this way, the strength of body and mind will diminish, and then relax the body and mind. Second, contemplate the suffering of pretas: Even if one is liberated from hell and born in the realm of Yama, there is immeasurable suffering. This has three types of obscurations: external obscurations, internal obscurations, and obscurations of food and drink. The first is that whatever food and drink they see, they only see water filled with impure things such as pus and blood, and the groves of Malaya, or the burnt groves, etc., everything appears completely inverted. As it says in the "Friendly Epistle": 'Due to the extremely unbearable karma being fully ripened, they are confused; to them, all these various things appear inverted.' The second is: 'A mouth as small as the eye of a needle, yet they must swallow food as large as a measure; the poor stomach, even if they drink the water of the great ocean, the throat will not become wide. The poison in their mouths even turns drops of water into thirst.' Like this, they experience suffering. The third is, as it says in the "Friendly Epistle": 'Some are tormented by hunger and thirst, their mouths burning, and they feed on burning sand.' Like this, whatever food they taste turns into burning flames, and they suffer the pain of their intestines and other organs being burned. These sufferings last for a hundred years, counting thirty days in a month. As it says in the "Treasury of Knowledge": 'For pretas, a month is five hundred days of humans.' Like this, they experience suffering, and since there is no way to be born there, think as before. Third, contemplate the suffering of animals: There are two types of animals: those who live submerged in the darkness between the ocean and the continents, and those who are scattered in the abodes of gods and humans. Regarding these, as it says in the "Friendly Epistle": 'Even in the place of animal existence, there are various sufferings such as killing, binding, and beating, and for those who have abandoned peace and virtue, it is extremely terrible to devour each other. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, meat, and skin, without autonomy, subject to others.'
