Rest and abide, knowing it to be the union. The training of speech: Abandoning the activities of speech such as chanting, reciting, and discussing, staying without speaking, thereby the breath becomes gentle and comfortable. The training of mind: Such as meditating on the deity, contemplating the Dharma, devotion, compassion, etc., without letting the mind wander, staying quietly. By this, the mind will enter the object of focus. In short, the body is trained by the physical movements, speech is trained by abiding in the solitude of speech, and mind is trained by abiding in the calmness of mind. These three are like preparing before a horse race. If done like this for a year or a month, there is a possibility that Samadhi will arise spontaneously. The body, speech, and mind of ordinary people, when trained, will give rise to wisdom. So it is said. Having done so, the signs of physical training are physical comfort, lightness of rising, and being able to sit in any posture for a long time, etc. The signs of speech training are not feeling the breath going in and out, and not feeling uncomfortable when it does not move inside and out, etc. The signs of mind training are clarity, purity, and not scattering elsewhere, etc. Until these signs arise, one should strive in training. Second, the common preliminary practices have two parts. First, there are three aspects of focusing on the key points. The key point of the body is: whichever posture is comfortable, either the lotus position or the squatting position. If it is the lotus position, then it is either the bodhisattva lotus position or the vajra lotus position, with the hands in the gesture of equipoise. If it is the squatting position, then the two legs are crossed, and the two legs are placed flat like an ink pot and a tripod. If the weight is placed on one side, it will be uncomfortable. The hands are in the meditation gesture or the reversed hand gesture. In both of these postures, the head is slightly bowed, the eyes are focused on the tip of the nose, the tongue touches the palate, and the teeth and lips are gently closed. These should be mainly done in the lotus position, especially for the elderly, during the spring and autumn seasons, for blood and bile diseases, and during warm and hot seasons. The squatting position should be practiced by the young, during the winter season, for cold diseases, when phlegm is heavy, and during all cold seasons. Thus, by placing the body in the key point, the channels will not be disturbed. By this, the mind abides, and Samadhi arises spontaneously, like the foundation of building a house. The key point of speech:

Clearing a sore throat by forcefully expelling air from the nostrils, like dusting off dirt in a room. Focusing the mind on the essential point is like briefly relaxing the mind, like taking a breath before a horse race. Second, regarding meditation, there are three aspects: First, to transform all accumulated actions into benefiting others and to cultivate the mind of enlightenment for practicing the Mahayana path, one should think: 'For the sake of all sentient beings, I must attain Buddhahood. For that purpose, I will meditate on samadhi.' Second, as a limb of perfecting the accumulations, meditate on the lama: Visualize the lama above the lotus, moon, and sun on the crown of your head, and generate strong devotion. Pray for blessings so that a special samadhi may arise in my being. Pray repeatedly from the depths of your heart. Finally, with devotion, dissolve the lama into the crown of your head. Third, to abandon ordinary thoughts, meditate on the deity: By uttering 'Hūṃ' (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽), create a protective wheel. Again, by uttering 'Hūṃ' (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽), expand it gradually, or visualize any two-armed Heruka. To prevent obstacles to the body, visualize a white 'Oṃ' (Tibetan: ༀ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ॐ, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 嗡) on the moon at the crown of your head; to prevent obstacles to speech, visualize a red 'Āḥ' (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: आः, Sanskrit Romanization: āḥ, Chinese literal meaning: 啊) on the lotus at the throat; to prevent obstacles to mind, visualize a black 'Hūṃ' (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) on the sun at the heart. Recite 'Oṃ Āḥ Hūṃ' (Tibetan: ༀ་ཨཱཿ་ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ āḥ hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 嗡啊吽) three times, making it clear, thus protecting against obstacles. Three purifications, three focusings on the essential point, and three meditations—these nine limbs of contemplation are the prerequisites for all contemplations. Second, regarding the actual practice of the path, there are three appearances to pervade it, and all scriptures are summarized into three tantras, using the three tantras to pervade it. The first of these is to pervade with impure appearances, experiential appearances, and pure appearances. The first of these is: In the Vajra verses, it says, 'For sentient beings.' Therefore, by examining the realm of sentient beings, one understands the faults of samsara, and initially contemplates the faults of samsara. It also says, 'For afflictions.' Because of afflictions, the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, used in great, medium, and small degrees, will lead one to the three lower realms. And the leisure and endowments of human form, which allow liberation from there, are difficult to obtain. Therefore, one then meditates on the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments. The so-called impure appearance is the impure, deluded appearance.
