Having started acting relying on me, then the first of the three is to cultivate believing in the law of cause and effect. The aspects of the suffering of samsara are inconceivable, but if summarized, they can be condensed into three sufferings, namely the suffering of suffering (Sanskrit: Duḥkha), the suffering of change, and the suffering of pervasive conditioning. Cultivating these three sufferings, the first is the suffering of hells, hungry ghosts, and animals. Thinking about these three, the first is the hot hells, cold hells, and neighboring hells. The first is as it says in the "Friendly Letter": "Beings who commit evil deeds, in the hells of punar jīvana (Sanskrit, Roman transliteration: punar jīvana, Chinese literal meaning: resurrection), black rope, extreme heat, and, aggregation, vināśa (Sanskrit, Roman transliteration: vināśa, Chinese literal meaning: destruction), wailing, uninterrupted, etc., constantly suffer all kinds of pain." Thus, the suffering of punar jīvana (Sanskrit, Roman transliteration: punar jīvana, Chinese literal meaning: resurrection), black rope, aggregation vināśa (Sanskrit, Roman transliteration: vināśa, Chinese literal meaning: destruction), wailing, great wailing, heat, extreme heat, uninterrupted, etc., is unbearable. The beings in the resurrection hell, mutually generate the thought of enemies, whatever they pick up in their hands becomes a weapon, and they strike each other to death. When a cold wind blows, or a voice from the sky says, "Resurrect!", the body is resurrected as before. Again, they strike each other as before, and experience suffering. The black rope hell is, drawing four or eight black lines, etc., on the bodies of hell beings, and then sawing along the black lines from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, or chopping with an axe. At that time, the lower part of the body is cut off, the wounds of the upper part heal, and when the upper part is cut, the wounds of the lower part heal. In this way, they constantly experience suffering until the karma is exhausted. The aggregation vināśa (Sanskrit, Roman transliteration: vināśa, Chinese literal meaning: destruction) hell is, the hell guards holding weapons with the images of goat heads, sheep heads, horse heads, etc., squeeze the hell beings in the mountains, like squeezing sesame oil, pressing them into powder. When the two mountains separate, the body returns to its original state, and then is pressed into powder again, experiencing such suffering. The wailing hell is, when entering a room, due to the power of karma, the iron chamber becomes without doors, and it is burned by a raging fire inside, causing great suffering, so they wail and cry. The great wailing hell is, a two-story iron chamber is burned by a raging fire, causing even greater suffering, so they wail and cry even more. The hot hell is, with burning iron.

They experience suffering such as being violently drilled between their legs, with smoke and flames billowing out of the holes. The Extremely Hot Hell is where a burning iron trident is used to pierce both arms and the crown of the head, causing the inside of the body to burn, with flames and smoke continuously erupting from the throat and mouth, the abdomen rupturing, and the internal organs spilling out, among other sufferings. The Uninterrupted Hell is where flames burn from all four directions, above and below, becoming indistinguishable from the hell-being's body, experiencing the suffering of being incinerated. The presence of beings there can only be inferred from their cries of agony, and it is impossible to distinguish their individual forms. Furthermore, there are immeasurable sufferings such as being sprinkled with burning fine iron powder, being cooked in burning oil in iron vessels, having the tongue stretched out and nailed to a burning iron plate, being doused with molten copper, and being forced to walk on ground that spews sparks of fire. In each successive hell, on top of experiencing the sufferings of the previous hell, they also experience their own unique and intensified sufferings. How long do they experience these sufferings? The Treasury of Knowledge states: 'For humans, fifty years, of the desire realm gods, one day and night is equal to, the successive order of rebirth and other hells. The lifespan of the desire gods is equal to their days and nights, therefore their lifespans, are the same as the desire gods.' The Extremely Hot Hell and half of the Uninterrupted Hell are called intermediate kalpas. For the Four Great Kings, fifty human years is one day, and their lifespan is five hundred years. For the Thirty-three Gods, one hundred human years is one day, and their lifespan is one thousand years. For the Yama Gods, two hundred human years is one day, and their lifespan is two thousand years. For the Tushita Gods, four hundred human years is one day, and their lifespan is four thousand years. For the Nirmanarati Gods, eight hundred human years is one day, and their lifespan is eight thousand years. For the Paranirmitavasavartin Gods, one thousand six hundred human years is one day, and their lifespan is sixteen thousand years. The lifespans of these gods, with their respective days as units of years, are the lifespans of the rebirth and other hells in order. The lifespan of the Extremely Hot Hell is half a middle kalpa, and the lifespan of the Uninterrupted Hell is one middle kalpa. The Cold Hells include: the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, and the Achuchu Hell.
