May you swiftly attain the state of omniscient Buddhahood, the ultimate aspiration for effortlessly accomplishing all benefits for oneself and others in future lives, son Keldan Ngawang Drakpa, this is the instruction of Je Rinpoche. Furthermore, the methods for cultivating renunciation and compassion are as previously mentioned. Je Rinpoche said, "The Kadampa method of cultivating the view is to cultivate emptiness as the object of grasping." The meaning is: During the time of listening and contemplation, the meaning of selflessness, which has been determined by valid reasoning as explained in Madhyamaka, must be abandoned by the superior insight generated by the power of repeatedly examining with the wisdom that understands the meaning of emptiness, the self-grasping that is the root of samsara, even when practicing meditation. Therefore, when meditating on the view, it is not enough to merely make emptiness the object of one's own mind; it must be cultivated as the object of grasping. As it is said in Potowa's Bebu, "Some people, during listening and contemplation, determine the lack of inherent existence through reasoning, but during meditation, they say they only meditate on non-conceptualization. In that case, it becomes an unrelated emptiness, and because it is practiced separately, it will not become an antidote. Therefore, even during meditation, one should separately examine one and many, dependent origination, etc., based on familiarity, and slightly abide in non-conceptualization. If you meditate in this way, the antidote to afflictions, like a single deity following behind, wanting to practice the Paramita, this is the method of meditating on wisdom. This is also done by familiarizing oneself with the selflessness of persons, and then following accordingly." These methods of meditation are the methods of cultivating the view of the Paramitas, and among them, it is also the time when ordinary beings, beginners, first cultivate the view. Therefore, one meditates on selflessness with inferential cognition based on valid reasoning or correct reasons. If one does not repeatedly think about and examine the reasons for selflessness, then the strong ascertainment of selflessness generated by that reasoning will not arise, and if it does not arise, then the meditation-born arising that focuses on selflessness will not arise. If it does not arise, then selflessness will not become manifest. For example, impermanence and the faults of karma and its effects and samsara, loving-kindness and compassion

When meditating on the mind of enlightenment, etc., it is not enough to merely hold the thought, "I will die." For it is necessary to contemplate in detail the reasons why "I will certainly die, I will die quickly, and there is no certainty when I will die." As it is said in the Great Insight, examining from many perspectives with scripture and reasoning is for the sake of realizing selflessness, which has not yet been realized. If one thinks that one has already gained the view and therefore does not need to examine it during meditation, then one will manifestly realize selflessness on the path of seeing. After that, meditating on what has already been seen becomes meaningless. If one thinks that it is necessary to meditate because what is to be abandoned by meditation is abandoned by practice, not merely by seeing, then the same applies here. Although one has already ascertained through hearing and thinking, one still needs to become accustomed to ascertaining. For the more one ascertains and the more one becomes accustomed to it, the more intense and lasting the certainty becomes, and the clearer and more stable it becomes. Therefore, as it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Certainty and imputation are, by nature, what is harmed and what harms." As it is said, the two are what is harmed and what harms, and the more stable and intense the certainty becomes, the more it harms imputation. Therefore, here too, one must continually increase the certainty of selflessness. This must also be contemplated from the perspective of various harms and proofs. If this is not the case, then with regard to impermanence, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, the mind of enlightenment, loving-kindness, and compassion, etc., after gaining an understanding of these, if one does not examine them and merely holds the thought "I will die" and extends it, that would be acceptable, because all the reasons are the same. Therefore, in order to lead to pure certainty, merely the thought "I will die," and the thought "For the sake of sentient beings, I will attain Buddhahood," and the thought "Sentient beings are so pitiful," etc., merely making a vow is not enough, just as one must contemplate the reasons from many perspectives. To make the certainty of selflessness stable and intense, one cannot merely hold a vow, but must contemplate from the perspective of various harms and proofs. This has been explained again and again in the context of the Lesser Person.
