Transforming it into the path involves two aspects: thought and action. In terms of thought, both conventional and ultimate Bodhicitta transform adverse conditions into the path to enlightenment. Firstly, all suffering arises because previously, self-grasping was not recognized as the enemy, and the kindness of sentient beings was not appreciated. Now, all suffering reveals the faults of self-grasping. Therefore, it is said, "All blame falls on one." This means that whatever suffering I experience is due to my own clinging to self, so do not blame others. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Whatever harm there is in the world, and whatever fear and suffering there may be, all arise from clinging to self. What can this great demon do to me?" From beginningless time, we have grasped at self where there is no self, and accumulated actions such as harming others for the sake of cherishing it. Therefore, all suffering, including the suffering of the lower realms in samsara, has arisen. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Your mind, desiring to accomplish your own benefit, has passed through countless eons, but with such great effort, you have only accomplished suffering." Thus, suffering and grasping arise, and self-grasping is regarded as the enemy. This mind that grasps at self where there is no self has generated all suffering from beginningless time until now. Jealousy towards those who are higher, contempt for those who are lower, and competitiveness towards those who are equal all arise from this. All suffering, such as liberation from samsara and harm from humans and non-humans, is caused by this. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "This has harmed me in samsara for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes. Now, remembering past grudges, destroy your self-cherishing mind." This means that when self-grasping arises, if you examine it, there is no self to be found. Why then do you grasp at self? Therefore, when self-grasping arises, abandon it immediately. Strive to ensure that self-cherishing does not arise in the future. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Where you have destroyed me in the past is another time. Now I have seen you, where do you want to go? Destroy all your pride." Therefore, whatever harm arises is caused by the demon of self-grasping, so strive to subdue it.

The venerable O-pa said, "In this short life, we must try to subdue this arrogant one." Furthermore, the thought of striving for one's own benefit is called "non-human," and the thought of striving for the benefit of others is called "practitioner." One should adopt and abandon practices according to the way of the virtuous friend Aben. Geshe Aben said, "Now there is nothing more important than pressing a firm short spear against the gate of the mind's castle. If he is firm, I am firm; if he relaxes, I relax." Regarding the act of abandoning self-grasping as an enemy, the venerable Shabo said, "This is the Dharma of sending away the arrogant one." Therefore, in order to regard self-grasping as an enemy and cherish others, one should cultivate gratitude towards all beings. Generally speaking, all sentient beings have been our kind mothers since beginningless time, and they have already shown kindness. Moreover, the attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi also depends on sentient beings. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Sentient beings and the Victorious Ones are equal in the means of attaining Buddhahood. Why not respect sentient beings as much as we respect the Buddhas?" Thus, for a person who is striving to attain Buddhahood, the kindness of the Buddhas and sentient beings is equal. Therefore, towards such kind sentient beings, one should strongly cultivate love and compassion, taking upon oneself their sins and sufferings, and giving them one's own happiness and virtue. In particular, if a human or non-human being harms oneself, one should think: "This harmer has not been my mother since beginningless time. He does not hesitate to commit sins and bad deeds for my sake, and thus experiences various sufferings in samsara. Due to the power of delusion, he does not recognize that he was my relative in the past, and driven by my bad karma, he has now committed the sin of harming me, and will suffer the consequences in the future. Because of me, this person will suffer for a long time, and is suffering now, so I should strongly cultivate compassion." In the past, I have only harmed him, but now I will make amends for his harm and accomplish his benefit. Thinking thus, one should strongly cultivate the practice of giving and taking. In particular, if one sees a human or a dog directly, one should strive to give them actual benefit in whatever way possible.
