If you do not know, even if you want to attain happiness and eliminate suffering, those are just meaningless wanderings. Apart from guarding one's own mind, what is the use of many actions? Therefore, it is very important to examine the motivation in whatever one does. If one engages in activities from farming to meditation with the desire for happiness, fame, and good reputation in this life, then such a person is no different from an animal and is called a "person of this life." If one practices Dharma or worldly activities with the desire for gods, humans, etc., in the next life, then that is called a "lesser person." All the actions they do are only the cause of samsara. If one wants to be liberated from samsara and is disgusted, fearful, and afraid of all the activities of samsara, and then practices Dharma, then that virtuous action is the only cause of liberation from samsara, and is called a "middling person." Not only to liberate oneself, but all actions done for the sake of liberating all sentient beings are the cause of complete Buddhahood, and are called a "great person" or a "supreme person." Therefore, the three types of people, great, small, and middling, are also distinguished only by their motivation. Therefore, one must adopt and abandon motivations. First, all desires for happiness in this life must be abandoned, and all practitioners must first abandon this life. If this is not abandoned, then having the name of a practitioner is meaningless. As mentioned before, most of the time, the desire for happiness in this life only leads to non-Dharmic actions, not Dharmic actions. For example, a horse does not have the characteristics of a lion, so it cannot be called a lion. Therefore, abandoning this life is the beginning of Dharma, the first thing in Dharma, and the earliest thing for practitioners to prepare for practice. As the great scholar said: Gyamawa Tashi Gyaltsen (1147-1216), a descendant of the Gyer family, the abbot of the lower monastery of Sangbu Lingma, the teacher of Langtang Monastery and Gyama Rinchen Gang Monastery, was famous for the three studies of discipline, concentration, and wisdom, and was said to have meditation, clairvoyance, and immeasurable merits. He had many great disciples such as Yakde Panchen, and also taught the teachings of the Sakya school. He lived to the age of sixty-two. Even if you have not completed any single Dharma practice, you boast of being a practitioner, alas, how foolish! The first thing in Dharma is to abandon this life, see if it is present in your own mindstream. Lama Yegonpa said: Here, the Olna of U-Tsang is placed.

I am the great accomplished son of Na! Now, reduce your attachment to your homeland. Show your back to relatives with a small face. Rely on contentment as an antidote to wealth. This is the first piece of advice on renunciation. He said. Therefore, did you practice Dharma before or not? Can you practice Dharma now or not? One should examine whether one has given up or not the perfections of this life, such as one's homeland, relatives, food, wealth, etc. Marpa Lotsawa said: Son, if you do not give up this world and pursue the activities of this life and the sacred Dharma, then that Dharma is already lost. Son, contemplate the suffering of samsara! The nature of samsara is like this. Even if I manifest with a thousand tongues, and speak for countless eons, it will not be enough to express it. Did I speak, or did I waste the Dharma in vain? It is said that this was the teaching given by Jetsun Milarepa when he went to his homeland. The boundless deeds of Jetsun are clear in the biography. His real name was Thöpa Ga, Dorje Gyaltsen, Khagong Thangpa, he attained accomplishment, and lived to the age of eighty-four. The two successors were: Dakpo Lhaje and Rechung Dorje Drak. The great son, the main lineage holder, was Dakpo Lhaje. The five heart-sons were: Rechung Dorje Drak, Nyenchung Repa, Nganzong Tönpa of Tsanglung, Drigom Repa of Tamo, and Dotra Seben Repa. The eight close sons were: Repa Shiwa Ö, Repa Sangye Kyab, Repa Tsapuk, Repa Dorje Wangchuk, Shengom Repa, Rechung Repa, Kharchu Repa, and Langgom Repa. The six outer Repas were: Likor Charuwa, Öntön Gedun, Kyotön Shakya Gu, Dampa Gyakpuk, Seben Tönchung, and Iwar Tashi. This song is an instruction to Repa Shiwö. Jetsun Mila also said: Son, if you truly intend to practice the Dharma from the heart, if faith arises from the depths of your heart, if you do not look back at this life, if you truly follow me, relatives and friends are the devil's plow, it is true, do not hesitate, cut off the ties. Food and wealth are the devil's sentries, familiarity will make them bad, abandon attachment. Desires are the devil's snare, they will surely bind you, let go of attachment. Young friends are the devil's daughters, they will surely deceive you, be careful and wary. Homeland is the devil's prison, to be liberated, listen to the teachings, quickly flee. In short, everything is like that.
