Having heard this, and having realized the difficult conduct of the Bodhisattvas through wisdom, for those who take on the burden of saving all beings from suffering, one should perform prostrations, make offerings, confess sins, rejoice in merit, urge the Buddhas, make requests, dedicate to Bodhi, and pray to virtuous friends, repeating their words or speaking for oneself. Thirdly, regarding the ritual of how to receive it, there are three rituals: preliminary, main, and concluding. The initial preliminary also has four parts: taming the mind with special instructions, making requests in special places, taking refuge in special supports, and accumulating merit and purifying obscurations through special methods. The first also has three parts: generating aversion to the suffering of samsara, eliminating weakness towards the peace of nirvana, and generating joy in the mind of Bodhi, the path that is free from both extremes. The first is that samsara is of the nature of suffering. There are eighteen types of hells. Among them, the hot hells are: पुनर्जीवन (Tibetan: ཡང་སོས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: पुनर्जीवन, Sanskrit Romanization: punar jīvana, Literal Chinese meaning: Revival), कृष्णसूत्र (Tibetan: ཐིག་ནག, Sanskrit Devanagari: कृष्णसूत्र, Sanskrit Romanization: kṛṣṇasūtra, Literal Chinese meaning: Black Thread), संघट्ट (Tibetan: བསྡུས་འཇོམས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: saṃghaṭṭa, Sanskrit Romanization: saṃghaṭṭa, Literal Chinese meaning: Striking Together), रौरव (Tibetan: ངུ་འབོད།, Sanskrit Devanagari: raurava, Sanskrit Romanization: raurava, Literal Chinese meaning: Howling), महारौरव (Tibetan: ངུ་འབོད་ཆེན་པོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: mahāraurava, Sanskrit Romanization: mahāraurava, Literal Chinese meaning: Great Howling), तपन (Tibetan: ཚ་བ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: tapana, Sanskrit Romanization: tapana, Literal Chinese meaning: Hot), प्रतपन (Tibetan: རབ་ཏུ་ཚ་བ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: pratapana, Sanskrit Romanization: pratapana, Literal Chinese meaning: Extremely Hot), अवीचि (Tibetan: མནར་མེད་པ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: avīci, Sanskrit Romanization: avīci, Literal Chinese meaning: Uninterrupted). In these, they stab each other with weapons, saw them with saws, two mountains come together and crush them, after inserting burning iron spears, they are beaten on the iron-burning ground, imprisoned in a burning iron room without doors, boiled in unbearable hot water in a large pot, burned in all ten directions filled with fire, and so on. There are immeasurable sufferings, and all of these are the result of great non-virtue. As the "Bodhicharyavatara" says: "The Yama's servants strip off all the skin, extremely exhausted and weakened, molten liquid iron melted by extremely hot fire is poured onto the body, pitifully, burning swords and spears stab, chopped into a hundred pieces of flesh, falling onto the blazing iron ground, transformed by many non-virtues." The cold hells are: Blister Hell, Blister Bursting Hell, Achuchu Hell, Chehuhu Hell, Sonamtam Hell, Blue Lotus Cracking Hell, Red Lotus Cracking Hell, Great Red Lotus Cracking Hell, these are eight.

Due to the extreme cold, numerous blisters arise on the body, causing groaning and wailing, as well as the suffering of flesh and bones cracking, and so on. As it is said in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'The merciless wind penetrates the bones, the body stiffens, shivers, the flesh shrinks, huddled in a ball, truly pitiful. Hundreds of blisters burst, giving rise to living beings, swords wielded, dripping pus, blood, and marrow.' The neighboring hells are: falling into a great pit of smokeless fire, and falling into a swamp of rotting corpses, where beings pierce the flesh and bones; on a plain covered with razor-sharp hairs, wherever the body touches, it is cut by the razor hairs; a forest of sword-leaves moved by the wind, the swords breaking and cutting the body into countless pieces; climbing the trees of Shalmal Mountain, which have iron thorns sixteen fingers long, ascending and descending causes the body to walk as if skinned; and falling into the extremely hot water of the river called 'Boundless River,' where the body and bones melt like copper in a pot, and so on, there are many sufferings. These are each complete, like the four sides of the hot hells. As it is said in the 'Treasury of Knowledge': 'On each of their four sides are smokeless fire, a swamp of corpses, a path of razor hairs, and a river.' The ephemeral hells are: existing in various places such as the seashore, there is the suffering of the body burning, being devoured by beings, and so on. Therefore, hell beings have extremely numerous sufferings. As it is said in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'Here, the pain of being stabbed violently by three hundred short spears in one day is not even a small fraction of the suffering of hell, therefore, strive to cultivate renunciation. Even if sweet rain falls, it is unbearable.' Hungry ghosts do not find even a little food or drink for many years and months, tormented by hunger and thirst, and there is the suffering of heat and cold, and so on. As it is said in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'In the realm of hungry ghosts, born from stinginess, constantly experiencing unbearable suffering, tormented by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear, therefore, constantly cultivate generosity.' Animals also have many sufferings, such as eating each other, being exploited, and being killed for their flesh and skin, and so on. As it is said in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'In the realm of animals, being killed, bound, beaten, and various sufferings, cultivate loving-kindness.'
