Which are to be blamed. As it says in the Sutra of Sagacious Ocean: If a Bodhisattva, having generated such a mind, does not act as he has spoken, he deceives the world including the gods. And so on. Secondly, like a king losing his kingdom, various inauspicious things will happen in this life, and at the time of death, he will be tormented by sorrow, as stated in the sutra. Thirdly, in the future, one will go to the lower realms and it will be difficult to escape from them. The fault of the root downfall is that all the roots of virtue of the Bodhi-mind previously generated are destroyed, and by deceiving the Three Jewels including the gods, one will generally fall into the lower realms, and especially into hell. As it is said in the sutra: It is the great cause of the hell of sentient beings. Secondly, the causes for the occurrence of such a downfall with such faults are: ignorance, carelessness, many afflictions, and disrespect. Among these, ignorance means that even though one strives to learn, one commits a downfall because one does not know the characteristics of the downfall. Therefore, one should listen to and understand the subjects to be learned. Carelessness means that even though one knows the downfall, one does not see its faults, or even if one sees its faults, one commits a downfall because one has no mindfulness and awareness. Therefore, one should cultivate mindfulness that does not forget the objects of what to adopt and abandon, and awareness that examines the three doors of body, speech, and mind separately, and knows what to engage in and what to refrain from, and shame that refrains from evil deeds out of consideration for oneself or the Dharma, and embarrassment that refrains from evil deeds out of fear of being blamed by others, and diligence in cultivating non-carelessness out of fear of the consequences of evil deeds. Many afflictions mean that even if a little shame arises, one still commits a downfall due to afflictions because the three poisons are strong. Therefore, one should examine one's own mind stream, and diligently rely on the antidote to whichever affliction is strongest, and one should not have the attitude of thinking that even if one violates this little bit, the fault is small. Disrespect means that even though one knows about downfalls, etc., one commits a downfall because one is inclined towards inferiority and despises the precepts, and is unwilling to practice. Therefore, one should respect the Teacher and the precepts established by him. Among these, small downfalls are committed due to ignorance and carelessness, medium downfalls are committed due to many afflictions, and large downfalls are committed due to disrespect, and there will be corresponding changes depending on the difference in intention. Therefore, one should regard the places of what to adopt and abandon as one's life.
