Think as it is said, "Know and think well." If so, then death is certain, death is swift, and the time of death is uncertain. At the time of death, nothing else is beneficial. The only thing that is beneficial from the time of death until endless rebirths is the sacred Dharma. Therefore, one should strive in the Dharma right now, thinking in this way. This is the seventh session. Now, meditate on this Dharma of impermanence of death, which has five root words. First, think of not staying and changing. Second, think much of the death of others and oneself. Third, repeatedly think of the many causes of death. Fourth, think of how one will change at the time of death. Fifth, think of how one will change after death. It should be done, from the time we are born until we die, this stream of aggregates constantly changes and goes on. I was like this when I was a young child, like this when I was a child, like this when I was young, and now I am like this, thinking and approaching death, getting closer and closer, there is nothing that can help, so gather awareness and place it in a state of renunciation. We remember that until now, someone like this in this place has died, and someone like that in that place has also died, so count them one by one in detail. Think of how many older than me have died, and how many of my age and younger have died. Compared to those who are alive now, there are many who have died. Few of them died of old age, most of them died untimely in the bardo. I am also of such a nature, not free from such a nature. It is fortunate that I have not died among them before. If I do not practice the true Dharma before I die, there is no way, think in this way. Have you heard or seen the death of other people and animals? Have you seen the changes in youth from childhood to old age? Even those who have not died, some who were strong have become weak, some who were weak have become strong, some who were rich have become poor, etc. Whatever you see or hear, you should clearly remember impermanence, and think that I or my side, my possessions, etc., are also of this nature, of this Dharma. Then, as before, think of the many causes of death, and think of all the things that I desire, I do not know how all these will cause my death, and I do not know how they will change now. At the time of death, if one dies with an unwholesome mind, then it is crucial.

The suffering of karma and so on is terrifying. Death does not come willingly and joyfully, but falls upon us unwillingly. Death is not a happy and joyful event, but comes with intense suffering. We have no knowledge of the next world, and it feels like wandering helplessly in an unfamiliar land. At the moment of our death, body and mind separate. This body either falls to the ground and becomes a corpse for worms and ants, or is thrown into the water and becomes food for fish and turtles, or is burned in the fire and only a handful of ashes remain, or is abandoned in the mountains and fields and becomes the object of contention for birds and dogs. Eventually, after a few days, not even a trace remains. The ultimate fate of the body that we cherish so much now is like this. With the burden of karma on our hearts, we must go to a place where we do not know where we will be reborn. Is there any other way than to not practice the Dharma now? Is there any other way than to do it and then postpone it? Thinking like this, as if putting on armor, we resolve to start practicing the Dharma truly now and persevere to the end. We ourselves spend our time joyfully, and others also say with envy that he has truly practiced the Dharma, and thus spend their time full of hope, and we must find a refuge. For this, we must practice the Dharma and gain stability. We must become accustomed to it, we must become proficient, but stability has not yet been attained. If we encounter misfortune such as illness, our mind cannot be controlled, we cannot persevere in practicing the Dharma, we violate the Dharma, we ourselves will regret it, and others will also blame us, and we are likely to die miserably. Since this is the case, we cannot let it go on like that, so we resolve to start practicing the Dharma truly now, to persevere until death, and not to do things that others will blame and that we ourselves will suffer from. For practitioners of the Dharma today, this antidote is essential. This is the end of the impermanence instruction. The eighth contemplation. Third, contemplating the suffering of the lower realms, divided into three: contemplating the suffering of hell, contemplating the suffering of hungry ghosts, and contemplating the suffering of animals. First, the preliminary and subsequent practices are as before. I cannot stay in the human realm for long, and I am afraid of death. Seriously speaking, death itself is not particularly frightening.
