If one is initially bound in samsara, then there is no possibility of a time for later liberation. If one is in a state of later liberation, then it would follow that one has not experienced samsara before, thus alternating between happiness and suffering, and the states of bondage and liberation arise separately, therefore it is determined that there is no permanent "self." Being a single entity is also unreasonable, for the so-called "self" appears to exist on the aggregates of one's own body and mind, but the eye is not the "self," nor are the ear, nose, tongue, and mind. If each of these were the "self," then there would be many; if each is not the "self," then the "self" cannot be found. Furthermore, if the "self" were the aggregates, then the "self" would be impermanent. If the "self" were other than the aggregates, then it would contradict the arising of the notion that when the eye consciousness sees, "I" see, and when the body touches, "I" touch. Therefore, the "I" with a single nature is not established. Because a single entity is not established, an independent entity is not established. In particular, since all actions are manifestly seen to depend on conditions, an independent "self" is impossible. Furthermore, the "self" is not established outside the aggregates, nor does the "self" reside within the aggregates. Each aggregate is not the "self," each aggregate is not the "self," and there is no "self" after the aggregates are removed. There is also no "self" in the totality of the aggregates, because a totality other than each individual is not established. Therefore, the so-called "self" is merely imputed by the mind, merely a mistaken and inverted perception, and there is nothing that is established in its essence. Meditate in this way. This is the third contemplation on the selflessness of persons. Meditating on the selflessness of the individual can be divided into several parts of the contemplation sequence according to the capacity of the mind. Now, the selflessness of phenomena is taught, and the so-called "phenomena" refers to the aggregates, elements, and sources. If these were not merely imputed by the mind, but there could exist a single entity capable of independent existence, then that would be the self of phenomena. However, such a situation is utterly impossible, therefore all phenomena are without a self of phenomena. Even so, in order to purify the conceptual thoughts that cling to the aggregates, elements, and sources as being independently established since beginningless samsara, it is necessary to meditate on the selflessness of phenomena. Among these, first, one must meditate on the aggregates of one's own continuum as being without inherent existence. And at the very beginning of that, when looking at the phenomena of the body, the form aggregate included in one's own continuum, what appears to be a variety of things is generally called the body.

I cling to the notion that there exists an entity corresponding to the name. Unless bound by inverted views, this is not established. Firstly, the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and bodily senses of this body are all different. The internal organs, which are the basis of the senses and are not the same as the senses, are also separate. The head, neck, chest, back, waist, stomach, abdomen, two shoulders, two arms, two elbows, two wrists, two palms, two hips, two thighs, two ankles, the five organs, the six hollow organs, and other internal organs, as well as the nine orifices and other various collections, I think of this as an aggregate. Therefore, the so-called body, apart from being merely a conceptual imputation, does not truly exist. If each of these were the body, then there would be many bodies. If each is not, then the body cannot be found. If it is thought to be merely an aggregate, since there is no aggregate independent of the individual parts, it ceases to exist as anything other than a conceptual imputation. Forty-fourth contemplation. Furthermore, this body, which is comprised of the skandha of form, is not truly established, because the four limbs, upper and lower parts, head, chest, lower abdomen, and internal organs are divided into nine parts. If each part were established, it is not established, because each part is further divided into three parts, and so on. If each part were real, it is not real, because it further decomposes into the size of a knuckle. If each knuckle were established, it is not established, because each knuckle is further divided into seven by seven barleycorns. If each barleycorn size is also not real, because seven by seven louse sizes eventually decompose into lice, sunbeam dust, yak hair dust, sheep wool dust, rabbit hair dust, water dust, and iron dust, by dividing the diameter size of the previous dust into seven by seven parts, it becomes the size of the later dust. If each iron dust were real, it is not real, because the diameter size of the iron dust has seven minute particles. Even this is not established, because each minute particle has seven extremely minute particles. If the length, width, and height of these sevenfold divisions of dust are all added together, by dividing the previous dust, the later dust has three hundred and forty-three parts each. Because the diameter has seven parts, the width also has that much, so it becomes forty-nine parts. Because the height also has seven parts, that is how it is. Forty-fifth contemplation. Dust
