Not only focusing on the object, but also putting it into practice, this is learning through action. Thus, for the three kinds of giving, there are six ways to learn through both thought and action. In short, it is to learn the perfection of generosity, which is the forty-sixth point of contemplation. This way of learning separately from thought and action can also be applied to the subsequent Dharma. Now, one must also learn the perfection of discipline. There are three kinds of discipline: the discipline of abstaining from evil deeds, the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. The discipline of abstaining from evil deeds generally refers to abandoning all naturally negative actions such as the ten non-virtues; in particular, as a layperson, monk, novice, the precepts of the Bodhisattva vow, or the samaya of mantra, one must not violate the protection of the vows one has taken. In short, it is to refrain from all actions that are said to be impermissible in the sutras and treatises, and to contemplate, "I should immediately learn this." The discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas is not just practicing one kind or one aspect of virtue, but constantly practicing all virtues encompassed by the six perfections. For this, one should also do as much as one can from now on. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings refers to benefiting sentient beings by placing them in happiness and various virtuous dharmas. For this, one should also contemplate, "I will do my best, and from now on, I will do whatever I can to bring benefit and happiness to sentient beings." For the discipline of abstaining from evil deeds, there is no time to delay; as soon as one hears of it, one must immediately break it and avoid it. For the latter two disciplines, one can delay a little, and do as much as one can now according to one's ability. Those that cannot be done now can be left for later as the object of aspiration. In general, if a Bodhisattva does not benefit others, that is the greatest fault, so the discipline of benefiting sentient beings is necessary. In order to benefit others, one needs to mature one's own mind-stream, so the accumulation of virtuous dharmas is necessary. If one thinks that it is enough to simply not be defiled by one's own faults and downfalls, that is not enough. However, at the initial stage, the discipline of abstaining from evil deeds is very important, because without this, the other two disciplines cannot be realized as they are. Contemplation point four

Seventh (chapter). Now, there are three perfections of patience: patience that does not mind harm, patience that accepts suffering, and patience that definitely contemplates the Dharma. These are the three. The first of these is: When others harm me by beating me, stealing my wealth, etc., if I cannot bear it and show signs of anger, how can I achieve Buddhahood if I cannot even bear this much harm? Even if all sentient beings in the three realms become enemies and inflict all kinds of harm, I must be able to endure it. If I cannot even bear this much harm, how can I expect to attain Buddhahood or be a practitioner of the Dharma? I think I am mistaken, and I should meditate in this way. Patience that accepts suffering is: When practicing the Dharma, if suffering such as heat, cold, hunger, and thirst arises, or if the path is difficult to travel, or if favorable conditions are not met, and if fatigue, exhaustion, sun, wind, and rain occur, how can I not endure this small amount of hardship for the sake of the Dharma? For the sake of wealth and wife and children, I endure a hundred or a thousand times greater suffering without hesitation. Since I must attain Buddhahood, I should learn from the biographies of past Bodhisattvas. If I cannot even endure this much hardship for the sake of the Dharma, and yet I claim to be a Mahayana practitioner, I am foolish. I should apply a strong antidote in this way. Patience that definitely contemplates the Dharma is: It refers to being able to understand everything, such as profound methods, the differences of skillful means, great deeds, infinite qualities, and the reality free from elaboration. It also refers to the ability to maintain the mind in emptiness for a long time. Here, all harm and suffering are like illusions, like dreams, appearing even though they are empty of truth. Since this is the case, what is there that cannot be endured? Meditate in this way. This is the forty-eighth mind-training practice. Now, we must also train in the perfection of diligence, which has three aspects: armor-like diligence, application diligence, and irreversible diligence. Armor-like diligence is: For all virtuous Dharmas, do not be arrogant, thinking that it is not necessary to do this, and do not be discouraged, thinking that you are not capable of doing this much. I will accomplish all of these.
