There is no guidance from a virtuous friend, and I am without the crutch of merit. All the sins that should not even be remembered have been repeatedly put into practice. Having fallen from the path of the heavens, and being on the verge of falling into the abyss of the three lower realms, these causes of suffering that reside in me are truly pitiable. Now, there is no way for me to truly save them from suffering. Therefore, in the three lower realms, the primary experience is of actual suffering, while in the three higher realms, the primary experience is of the causes of suffering. One should remember their suffering as described in the context of the lesser and intermediate persons. Because suffering befalls me, I cannot bear even a fraction of it. If I cannot bear it, how can these beings bear it? Like this, actually experiencing suffering and gradually indulging in the inexhaustible causes of suffering, these sufferings arising one after another are truly pitiable. May they be free from all suffering, may they be free from all causes of suffering—karma and afflictions. I will save these aged mothers, the beings of the six realms, from all sins and suffering. I repeatedly think of liberating them from the state of suffering. This is the thirty-ninth point of mind training. Alternatively, for this, there can be one point of mind training focused on experiencing actual suffering, one focused on the causes of suffering, and one combining both, making a total of three methods. As mentioned earlier in the section on loving-kindness, it would be good to gradually expand to all beings and meditate. Moreover, after one session of training in loving-kindness and compassion, these two naturally become interconnected, so it is sufficient to meditate by following each loving-kindness with compassion. It is acceptable even if they are not divided into separate sections. Third, the cultivation of bodhicitta, which includes the cultivation of aspirational bodhicitta and the cultivation of engaging bodhicitta. These two are also called the bodhicitta of intention and training in the perfections. The first of these includes training in actual bodhicitta, training in remembering the benefits, and taking vows regarding what is to be learned, these being the three aspects.

Firstly, meditate in conjunction with the previous two, loving-kindness and compassion. These mothers must be happy, must be joyful. But they are unhappy, not joyful, and suffer. It is pitiable. I have no way to eliminate their suffering, no way to place them in happiness. Although I do not have that ability, and neither do Brahma, Indra, or the Universal Monarchs. Then who does? Only the perfect Buddha has it. Since that is the case, if Buddhahood can be attained by practicing, then I must attain Buddhahood. Having attained it, I will liberate sentient beings from samsara. For the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, I must attain Buddhahood, think this repeatedly. These are the forty objects of focus. Previously, in the thirty-fourth object of focus, when learning the entrance to thought, one meditated merely on seeking perfect enlightenment by knowing the qualities of the Buddha and knowing the difference between the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. Merely doing that does not perfect the nature of the mind of enlightenment. But here, by meditating on the thought of seeking perfect enlightenment solely for the sake of others, the nature of aspiration bodhicitta will be complete. Although there was some thought of others' benefit before, because loving-kindness and compassion were not perfected, the primary focus on others' benefit did not arise. Next, the second is learning to contemplate the benefits. The benefit of accomplishing all one's own purposes is: the sutra says, "The mind of enlightenment is like a seed, for it generates all the Buddha's teachings." The benefit of accomplishing the benefit of others is: it increases the white dharma of beings, like a field. The benefit of eliminating all faults is: it exhausts all misconduct, like the ground beneath. The benefit of obtaining qualities is: it gathers all qualities, like a great ocean. As it says, there are four benefits. Right now, merely meditating on the mind of enlightenment nourishes the seed of liberation in one's own continuum and awakens all virtuous imprints. That good intention actually benefits sentient beings, and one also gains the ability to benefit. Merely meditating on this purifies many sins, subdues afflictions such as attachment, hatred, pride, jealousy, etc., and makes the continuum gentle, thereby generating all qualities.

, vowing to attain Buddhahood, many other qualities will also naturally arise. From then until ultimate Buddhahood, whether it is for one's own realization or for the benefit of others' activities, whether it is to abandon what should be abandoned or to cultivate virtues, all of this is done through Bodhicitta. In short, just as the All-Knowing Buddha has many qualities, so does Bodhicitta. Just as one thinks of the Buddha as being great, one should also think of Bodhicitta as being great, thereby generating joy in Bodhicitta, and then again meditating on Bodhicitta. Repeat this again and again. During breaks between sessions, also repeatedly remember the Bodhicitta vows that you have taken, and protect them. If you have not previously generated Bodhicitta, then for the benefit of those who constantly confess, recite "May I attain Buddhahood," etc., because these statements themselves are Bodhicitta, so repeatedly practice the seven-branch offering. This is the forty-first point of contemplation. Third, committing to the precepts: The first precept is that one must learn not to abandon sentient beings, and there are two ways of abandoning sentient beings: one is abandoning them as a whole, and the other is abandoning them directly. The first refers to losing faith in the Dharma, thinking, "I will not achieve anything for myself or for others, I will just be an ordinary person," and losing faith in the Mahayana, thinking, "I cannot accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, I should aspire to practice the Hearer or Solitary Realizer vehicle," and so on. Direct abandonment refers to thinking of some who are opposed to oneself, "Even if there is an opportunity to benefit you in the future, whether from a temporary or ultimate perspective, I will not help you," thereby completely losing compassion in one's heart. Whether it is abandoning as a whole or abandoning directly, if it is not remedied in time with an antidote, once a session has passed, Bodhicitta will be lost. I should ensure that I never generate the thought of abandoning sentient beings. If, unintentionally, such a thought arises, I should immediately remedy it with an antidote and confess immediately. For those beings who cannot be directly benefited now, I should aspire to benefit them in the future. This is the forty-second point of contemplation. The second precept is to strive to accumulate merit. I should gradually increase my qualities and continuously expand the accumulation of merit and wisdom. From today onwards, I must strive to accumulate the two accumulations, especially those that are said in the Sutras and Shastras to have great benefits.
