Suffering blazes like fire, churns like water, drifts like wind, and presses down like a mountain. Wherever one dwells, it is a place of suffering; whatever body one takes, it is a body of suffering; whoever one befriends, it is a friend of suffering; whatever one enjoys, it is an enjoyment of suffering. Suffering also has three aspects: the suffering of suffering, which is all suffering sensations such as heat, cold, and disease; the suffering of change, which is all pleasant sensations, including life, possessions, and even the bliss of meditative absorption; and the suffering of conditioning, which is the basis of the previous two, the aggregates of grasping at conditioning, which are the source and field of all suffering. When this is only accompanied by neutral feeling, it is only named the suffering of conditioning. Ultimately, there is no liberation from the other two without this, so one should meditate thinking that one must be liberated from the three sufferings. This is the twenty-ninth object of focus. Now, as previously stated, birth is suffering, aging is suffering, sickness is suffering, death is suffering, encountering the unpleasant is suffering, separation from the pleasant is suffering, and not obtaining what is desired is suffering, these are the seven sufferings. The eighth is, in short, the five aggregates of grasping are suffering. This is also suffering in five ways, becoming a vessel of suffering that manifestly accomplishes, which is supplicating for suffering from future lives onward. The vessel of suffering that depends on manifest accomplishment is that depending on the accomplishment of the aggregates themselves, birth, aging, sickness, death, and all others can occur. The vessel of the suffering of suffering, and the vessel of the suffering of change, these two arise depending on the aggregates. Becoming the nature of the suffering of conditioning is knowing that the aggregates themselves are the suffering of conditioning. One should meditate thinking that all of the three realms of samsara are the nature of the eight sufferings. Thinking about the eight sufferings, this is the thirtieth object of focus. There are also other categories of suffering in this samsara. First, the fault of suffering due to impermanence, which is enemies, friends, fathers, sons, and places and bodies.

All enjoyments are only uncertain. As it is said: The father is the son, the mother is the wife, and so on. Secondly, the fault of not knowing satisfaction is: no matter how much one enjoys desires, there is no satisfaction; no matter how much suffering one experiences, there is no weariness. Each one exceeds the four great oceans. Etc., can be applied. Thirdly, the fault of repeatedly abandoning the body is: one must repeatedly experience death. Each time, one's own body is a pile of bones, etc. Fourthly, the fault of repeatedly connecting rebirth is: one must take endless births. The end of mothers is like the size of a juniper seed, etc. Fifthly, the fault of repeatedly changing between high and low is: even if one becomes Indra, one will fall to the ground; even if one becomes a Chakravartin, one will be born as the lowest of slaves. Even in this one life, there is no trust in happiness and suffering, high and low, prosperity and decline. Even Indra, who has become worthy of worship in the world, etc. Sixthly, the fault of suffering alone without companions is: one is born alone, one dies alone, one experiences old age and sickness alone, and one must go to the Bardo alone. All companions and friends are meaningless. Therefore, one should repent of misdeeds and accumulate merit. Etc., can be applied. Thus, all of samsara is afflicted by the nature of six sufferings. Even if one is born at the peak of existence, it is effortless to go to the edge of Avici hell. Suffering is only a continuous extension. It is like entering a burning house, like a merchant entering the island of Rakshasis, like a nomad wandering in a pathless wilderness. In any case, one should repeatedly think, "I must quickly escape from this." Focus on the six sufferings, which is the thirty-onefold contemplation. Secondly, contemplating the arising of causes: Then, all of this samsara of such great suffering is not without cause and conditions. If one can stop samsara by abandoning the cause, then what is the cause? All sufferings arise from accumulated karma. All karma must first be taken up by afflictions. If there are no afflictions, then later karma will not produce results, so the root lies in afflictions. Self and sentient beings
